Well I bought the sapphire from Gary at Finewater gems, it is in the mail!

I got this sapphire to create a ring to represent my newborn son, Hunter, who is now 6 weeks old. It's no Amelia stone, but it'll do! LOL!

Now I need to know how to set it I am all over the place on this one. I want diamonds with it, since I adore the combination of diamonds and sapphires. My budget is around $1200.

Please help!

Awesome looking sapphire and such a cutie pie baby.  This stone although on the small side can handle a halo due to the intense colour.  I also like the idea of it being set east west to give it added interest.

Very modern and sleek.  I am also partial to open bezel settings.

I think it would look stunning with half moon sides like kaleigh's oval ring by leon, but this would probably be more than $1200.  My second pick, would be a sleek and modern setting like a bezel or half bezel with maybe some engraving on it.

Dreamer,
is this the sapph you were considering JM for?
If so, I think it would be lovely in one of his simple bezel bands..perhaps with some side diamonds?

I love this..

I love the JM ring, and I love the idea of a halo. But with you other (very cute) new addition, I would do a bezel halo that sits low, as so it does not get in the way of all the fun things you get to do as a mom (like change diapers, grab him before he gets into something he is not supposed to). And that sapphire is light enough to take a bezel.

Hi Linda,

I know...sigh..so simple yet so pretty.
I've decided (when the time comes), I will likely have Jim make our wedding bands

I don't know what is cuter the stone or the baby! He is just a doll! There are some stock settings you could consider for your ring if its within 3mm of a round number. Like 6.2x8.1! Now if I can only find that link!

Awwww- look at that baby boy. I bet he smells babylicious.

How about something like this? The three row domed setting is a bit above budget at $1395 (in WG) but you might also set it E/W on a one row band like the Legato at a couple hundred under budget. Either way, I think it'd look beautiful.

Congrats on your new purchase! And you baby boy is so precious! (you sure you are not using him as an excuse to get the ring?)

I vote for this two-tone ring. Others are too busy in my opinion. The sapphire has a pureness to it and reminds me of calm water, so I vote for something peaceful looking.

They're both so lovely! And interestingly, while reading your initial post I visualized something almost identical to what MTG suggested, cause I think semi bezels are great for these "baby projects" (their shape reminds me of a cradle). I'd set it east/west, cause the stone is not very big, and it's also lighter in tone, so that would give it a bit more presence on the finger. Be careful to not overdo it with the diamonds, for these same reasons.

Hehe, the open bezel east-west ring is my favorite design too, I had it tagged for a future project with I ever overcome my resistance against ovals, lol.

The design is from Arthur Groom, here's the original link.
http://www.arthurgroom.com/94-platinum-and-18k-yellow-gold-tanzanite-ring.html

I bet you could get a similar reproduction made in 14k gold within budget though :) I just linked the website because they have a lot of other nice things :)

Hunter is gorgeous - what a sweet baby!  You must be soooo happy.

I have admired that stone since it was put on Gary's site the first day.  I even made a post about it.  I'm glad to see it lasted until you could find it!!!

Congrats on all accounts!

Setting?  I'll have to think on that one.  What is your ering again?  Legato?

Wow! You all have set the cat among the pidgeons for sure! I wasn't thinking about bezel at all, although I do bezel set stones these days too!

There is another option that I didn't mention...

I presently have some ECs that are side stones on my present [not so great ] sapphire ring. I can trade them in with my local jeweler for side stone to pair with my new super duper sapphire in a three stone ring. I'm thinking pears or ovals? Any opinions?

With ovals, I would probably aim for this type of ratio, using ~.45ct sides:

http://www.tiffany.ca/Engagement/item.aspx?GroupSku=GRP10041&selectedSku=23041812#f+0/1005/2002/0/0/2002

I would probably also get a similar carat weight for pears.

As for bezels, there is a local jewelry designer named Linda Penwarden who does amazing work. I visited her store and loved what I saw! Since she is Canadian, my budget will go further.

Here is a ring of hers I adore...
