I recently purchased a ring, which is very nice and sparkles. The clarity is VS1 and the certificate says the only inclusion is a cloud. When I look at the ring from the side, I can see what looks like a line about a third of the way from the bottom. The line goes all the way across and all the way around. I am wondering if this is maybe a shadow, an illusion of some kind, or if it caused by a defect in the diamond. I've attached a photo, as well as I could take one, that demonstrates what I am talking about. Thanks for your help. Adrian.

The line that goes all the way around is the girdle reflection. It's normal.

It's a girdle reflection, if you search for that term, you'll learn a whole lot about them. It's not a flaw, but rather and optical phenomenon as you had guessed.
