Here's the riddle:

My girlfriend has a size 6.25 band on her finger (we're going to use it as a wedding band). It rotates when she is not bloated, and it won't come off at all when she is (you know.... women.. they're like blowfish around their "time of the month").

I would think to get a 6, since it's probably easier to increase the size rather than decrease the size; on the other hand (well, literally, on the same hand), she will be placing the engagement ring further up her finger, towards the knuckle.

As you folks probably know, fingers usually increase in girth a bit between the bottom-most band spot towards the knuckle. The wedding band is about 4.3 or 4.4 mm (plus or minus) and the engagement band, about 4mm. So should I get a 6.5 or 6? Also, she is losing weight (a lot. long story), so her finger will probably decrease in size (permanenty.. again, long story).

I'm leaning towards 6. Even if it's tight now her finger aught to get smaller when she drops the weight, right? Is it orders of magnitude easier to increase ring size rather than add material to decrease ring size?

Thanks

I think it is safer to get a bigger ring, at least during proposal you can still slip in a bigger ring but you might not be able to slip in a smaller ring and that might result in some awakard moments...

Then size it down if required, or wear a band or 2 with the ring will thicken the finger temporary to fit the ring if the size difference is not that big?

I would probably get her current size, but get a setting that can easily be re-sized again.  It's likely through pregnancy and age that her ring size will change over time and it's impossible to bit the correct fit all the time.  I've once heard a jeweler say that a perfect fit was when a ring was loose in the winter and tight in the summer, and that's as good as you can get.

It depends how far from now you are proposing to her, don't you think?

over 8mm of rings is a lot of width. Are you also getting married soon? You already have the band? I'm a little confused...Sometimes the w-band and the e-ring are different sizes.

It's actually easier to size down for most rings, so I would go with her current size and get it sized down if needed. Not all women's fingers get smaller when they lose weight. And if her "it currently fits alone" ring is a 6.25 that ring will get tighter when you add another ring to it, hence why you should not go smaller.

Honestly, if you're looking at an 8 mm set in total, I would think a 6.5 would be the minimum size. It may turn out that she'd even need a larger size with that much coverage. I definitely would not go for a 6.

I think it's generally easier to size a ring down than up. Also, you could look into sizing beads if it's just a tad too big, so my vote is to err on the larger side.

I normally wear a 6.25. My bands together are just under 6mm soldered together. I had to have them sized up to 6.75 due to the same issues.

I would go with the larger size...
