Diamonds a luxury??

tommalle Rough Rock Total Posts: 60 Last Post: 6/13/2009 Member Since: 1/4/2009	I was reading the talking abouts diamond to people in real life thread and a few people made reference to diamonds being a luxury item. I do agree that most people aren't able to buy huge beautiful diamonds whenever they please but I also don't think that diamonds are for only the wealthy. Its all about what you value and what you want to spend your money on. I am a stay at home mom and my husband is a teacher so we all know that I don't have tons of cash floating around. I have a 1.25 ct. solitaire with a few diamonds around it and of course people act as if its the biggest thing they have ever seen(mine doesn't even come close to a lot of rings on ps) and try to tell me that we must make a lot of money and that rich people have rings like these. Its like they are trying to make me feel guilty or something. But the way I see it I would rather have a nice wedding set than anything else and we sacrificed other things in order to get it. I compare it to people buying new cars, boats, ginormus homes and expensive trips. Are any of these things necessary? No. Do a lot of people enjoy these things and are they willing to spend their money to have them? Yes. You could also argue that these things are a luxury and only available to people who have money. I know of a family who drives run down old vehicles, their house has been under renovations for the 7 years that I have known them, and they are constantly asking to borrow a few bucks for gas. But they don't miss their annual trip to Disney World or their other yearly vacation of choice! Its all about what is important to people...and diamonds are important to me damn it!

People just put stock in different things. You can get a 1.25ct diamond for pretty cheap (2K) or spend a lot (8+K), depending on the quality. I don't know that I'd be borrowing bucks for gas to buy diamonds (or vacations for that matter), but I do plan on spending my money on a few rocks every now and then. I don't make big bucks either, but if I have to choose between a piece of diamond jewelery or a nicer car, I'm going with the diamonds! Does that make me crazy? Maybe, but at least I can pass the diamonds on to my kids should I choose to have them. They last a lot longer than cars!

I guess when I think about it, a luxury is anything that is not really a NECESSITY such as food or shelter. Well, I dunno what I'm getting at really - but you shouldn't feel bad for putting your extra money into something someone else may claim is frivolous - as long as you're able to pay the bills and put food on the table use your extra money for whatever you want - and don't feel bad about it!

LUNCH TIME ! it is always harder to find a "mind clean" stone than a eye clean stone.

Size and model are subjective. No one *has* to have a ring, much less a diamond. Yep, they're luxury items. That doesn't mean you have to be rich to buy one, just that you bought something that was extraneous to the needs of living. I consider boats luxury items also, unless you're planning to live on it. People are negative cos they are jealous usually. You and your DH work very hard to enjoy your life I am sure, so don't let anyone second guess your decisions. I spent what was in my book a lot of money on my wedding set, but we both felt comfortable with that cost. I don't smoke, drink only socially, we hardly ever go out and spend money on us, so I don't feel bad about that money spent. Just ignore these people and enjoy your beautiful jewellery for what they are - a precious symbol of your love and committment, and don't let anyone make you feel you have to justify that!
