My beau has just purchased a beautiful 4+ princess and wants to be sure it is safe during the setting process. Can a setting ne made based upon the specs from the GIA report and then the diamond be set in his presence? Does he need interim insurance? Does the laser marking provide any guarantees? Please advise. He's in NY. BFOX

I wouldn't worry too much about the diamond being switched, most jewellers are very honest and hardworking individuals who value their good name highly, as to the diamond being set in his presence you may find mixed reactions to this request and also setting a diamond can be a rough process and potentially traumatic to the rock's owner! What you could do is have the diamond appraised prior to setting from an independant appraiser who will make notes of any indentifying features of your diamond, then have the completed ring checked over ( to include the diamond) after setting to give you a suitable insurance figure on the finished piece. Also make sure you have the diamond insured against damage while setting, although rare accidents can happen, corners on Princess can chip etc so insurance is prudent. Check with whoever sets it if they will take responsibility should anything happen to the diamond but some won't cover a diamond they didn't sell. This tool lists appraisers in the NYC area. http://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.aspx Also depending on the clarity of your diamond, you can buy an inexpensive 10x loupe and learn to identify your diamond yourself by noting any visible inclusions through magnification. coatimundi_org Ideal Rock Total Posts: 6,312 Last Post: 6/7/2009 Member Since: 12/9/2007	I'd work with a reputable jeweler #1--you won't have to worry about having the stone set in your BF's presence. You should insure the stone. I believe Jeweler's Mutual will cover you during the setting process from what I've read here on PS. The only guarantee the laser inscription gives you is that you will be able to id your stone if you cannot otherwise from distinctive inclusions etc. You might want to ask the admin to move this topic to Rocky Talky. Just to be clear: I cast no aspersions on dealers, setters, etc. You know the expression, 'Frist time shame on you..etc" which rings (no pun intended) true as this precise scenario happened to me years ago when I reset a stone into a necklace. It was his word against mine & I was SOL. Yes, the stone had been switched! The stone was bought by a person who only deals in loose stones & the setter is a completley different individual. The stone is GIA certified & has a laser # ID. We intend to get it 're-certified' after the setting but I didn't realize all the inherent risks when setting the stone. I'll get it insured. Thanks!
