EastCoast Rough Rock Total Posts: 27 Last Post: 1/29/2009 Member Since: 1/3/2009	There are no Appraisers listed in Wisconsin, so I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good one? I live in Milwaukee, but would be willing to drive. I might end up just mailing it if thats easiest, but the mail always scares me a bit. Thanks for the help!

Just giving you a bump, one of our Wisconsinites might have a recommendation for you! If you do need to mail, USPS registered is very safe and your item is insured up to 25k I believe - it is slow but very secure as the package is under lock and key when not moving and has to be signed for whenever it changes hands. Per the US Postal Service website, you can send Priority Mail, registered and insured for a few dollars more, 2 to 3 days delivery to most locations. I found this out after sending my diamond to Brian in Texas for recutting. I did not send Priority, but it got there on the third day anyway.

There are a number of appraisers in Chicago if you are interested (some in the north suburbs) that have good reputations. Otherwise, I would personally just send it off to Richard Sherwood or Dave Atlas. They are wonderful appraisers who really have the experience to know what they are doing and will provide you with all the information that us nitpicky PSers want. Appraisers unfortunately are a dime a dozen, but GOOD appraisers are rare. And yes you want to send it REGISTERED mail. Whether you want to send it registered priority or registered first class is your choice, but the registered part is the important part.

Because of the security, registered mail travels slower than regular mail and it gets signed for at every step along the route. Its slower but its not so bad. For example. I received one on Thursday that was posted from NYC on Tuesday. That's a little faster than usual. I got one yesterday (Friday) that left San Diego the previous Friday and this was a bit slow but this included a holiday weekend. It varies a little bit depending on where you are but from a US address and to a US address is usually less than 5 business days and often its 2-3. Seems that they wouldn't offer the choice (??)

Out west where they still have every other day and in some places once a week mail delivery 1st class waits for the regular mail run, priority is delivered when it comes in.
