Hi guys

Please can you get your creative hats on for me?  I've been desperate for a purple sapphire for ages and FINALLY have found one.  I've been soooooooo picky about the colour (which has been the no.1 priority).  So this little baby has arrived.  The cut could be better and I would have preferred a bigger size but ............... I absolutely love this colour.  The sapphire is heated but no beryillium.

There is a very slight colour change to the stone.  In strong sunlight it's a deep amethyst purple but at night under electric light it has more raspberry/purple/fuscia tones.  The bottom photo is a true representation of it's daylight/sunlight colour but I can't capture it's richness in incandescent light.

Stats:  5.5 x 5.6 (can't recall the depth).  Does anybody have a gem of similar proportions that they've set so I can get an idea of how it will look set?

So, I want to set it into a ring with accent diamonds but also need it to look bigger so the setting can't be too small.  A bezel would be wrong so need to have prongs.  What would you do?  Oh and by the way, I'm on a budget so can't go down the mega expensive route!

What about a prong-set halo?

Fun project!

Now there's a task. One thing that might make it seem larger is to get a pair of similar colored stones (shapes like half moons, trillions, hearts...) and setting them on this one's sides, so that it all looks like one big stone. But that might be a bit expensive (depending on the stones). Going for rose gold might do the trick if the stone were pastel pink, but I doubt that would work with something this intense. Or maybe setting only two small diamonds on the sides would do. I believe if those would be small enough (say 5 pointers) the center stone would seem larger than it really is - at least in theory.

Miscka - the prong/halo route was the was I was heading until mr ma re through something else into the mix!

mr ma re - I don't want to mix colours because the sapphire has a slight colour change going on so it will be difficult to mix tonally so the ring looks great in all lighting conditions.  HOWEVER I LOVE your idea of diamond half moons on either side!  It's the one cut of diamond I don't own!!!

I've seen a ready made setting somewhere with half moons to each side surrounded by halos and the central stone with a halo  ....... can anybody help me find it please?

This wasn't the one I was remembering, but when I search this came up, and I think it is beautiful! Look at the detailing of the engraving: Half moon semi-mount

Thanks for the link Upgradeable.  The half moons being an L in colour put me off unfortunately (how fussy am I?!!!).

As a matter of interest, what did you put into the search engine of Ebay cos I put in half moon and semi mount and that ring didn't show up?

That's the search criteria I put, but it showed up under Stores (at the bottom of the page).

I love the half moon idea! What kind of budget are you thinking specifically? Unfortunately most of what I have seen with half moons are $$$

Not sure how half moon *diamonds* will make your stone seem bigger. Having something much lighter in tone (like diamonds) and very close in size (like majority of half moons available) next to it can only make it look smaller. That's because we perceive darker objects as smaller and this would only make the contrast more obvious.

A halo with air line would make the stone look bigger. How about very delicate double halos with delicate double shanks or split shank.

What about a 5-stone instead of a 3-stone, a la something in the same spirit as this Leon Mege - where you have two sets of small side stones, with the ones closer to the center stone larger and a different shape - it kind of stretches out the finger coverage, and small diamonds shouldn't be *too* expensive.

It's not like anything we've discussed, but I thought this was very pretty with the use of the baguettes. And it is something totally different than anything usually seen. (I'm getting bored with the ususal pave halos!)

Close as I could find to the half moon sides. They could easily modify the head to fit your stone.

WOW some great suggestions everybody.  Thank you.

Miscka - budget is actually non-existant but I'll find the money from somewhere - but I need to keep it low lol!

Mr ma re - totally see where you're coming from and I KNOW you're right but ......... lol!

Art Nouveau - I very much like that idea and it would make the whole ring look bigger.  Great suggestion thanks.

Amber Gretchen - that Leon ring is gorgeous but I think my centre stone is so small that I'd have to use a microscope to get diamonds small enough for side stones and although my finger is only a 6.5 they are wide looking so I need finger coverage!

I found a couple of contenders (that would need to be modified to take my gemstone.  Any thoughts?

I don't know how to help with the setting, but half moons sound great. And that sapphire is gorgeous, I love color change sapphires! Good luck with your project

Top right looks nice to me. BTW, wide shanks make the center stone look smaller. Oh and, I wouldn't go with yellow gold on this one, cause I'd like to take the best advantage of that color change.

II also dig the half moons idea.
I like the top and bottom right out of those.

Hi All

Top right was my favourite too (and I need a wide coverage because I have sausage fingers) but unfortunately the shank can't be adjusted to fit my stone I found out this morning   so back to the drawing board.

Mr ma re - don't worry, yellow gold isn't an option, whatever I have will be white gold.

Upgradeable - thanks for those suggestions.  I think we were posting at the same time yesterday so I didn't see your suggestions until just now!
