I've been wanting a mother's ring for a LONG time, but didn't want one of those kind that you see everywhere with the fake stones, etc. After seeing luvmyhalo's new gorgeous anniversary band this morning I realized exactly what I want!!! I want a ring like hers only with my children's birth stones in between each diamond. I have 5 kids, so I think it would look lovely... and the diamonds in between can represent all the beautiful grandchildren I will have someday. Now where to start? How to create this ring so it is quality and still not go too broke creating it. Is this something I need to start phoning, or can I do it via email? Where would be the better places to start? (I hope I have posted this in the correct category... please move it if it's in the wrong place.) I've been lurking on the boards for about a year now... didn't join the LIW pre-engagement because I wondered if I was too old (48) then I got engaged and didn't join because I love my engagement ring sooooo much that I don't want to know the "details" and I knew that in-the-know folks here would want details. I didn't want to know in case it isn't perfect or near-perfect -- I feel like so long as I don't know, it IS perfect! (Sappy, I know!)

Have you checked any alternative birthstone lists (there's like a zillion versions of them) in case you're not crazy about some of the stones? mr. ma re

If luvmyhalo's is exactly the style you want, you could always contact ID Jewelry and see if they can alternate the stones for you! Run turkey, RUN! (Little man in the avatar is my nephew.)

I'd contact one of the reputable PS vendors and ask them about sourcing the colored stones for you - that's probably the easiest for stones in that size.

Now I'm going to look on some other sites... I had forgotten about CNDTech's ring... it IS gorgeous -- very similar to what I have in mind.

ma re Ideal Rock Total Posts: 1,705 Last Post: 11/24/2009 Member Since: 8/10/2008	You are lucky cause the stones you listed all work well together, and they should actually be set right in that order. I would suggest making sure the colored stones are step cuts, cause if you would get (for example) 3 mm round cut emerald, I doubt you'd get more than a simple, lifeless green dot. Amethyst wouldn't turn out any better in brilliant cuts of that size. Step cuts also deepen the colors, which helps when working with small stones. When it comes to setting, yellow gold is your best option, cause it would bring out the beauty of all the stones. Most emeralds (read: majority of emeralds) have a bit too much blue in their greens, and to balance that into a nice green jewellers set them in yellow gold (blue+yellow=green). Amethysts develop a richer, more saturated purple when set in yellow, which can't hurt in this case (due to their size). And garnets tend to be quite dark in tone, so setting them in yellow gold reduces the contrast between stone and metal, while also bringing out the rich red tones. Not to mention that breaking those warm, rich colors with some sparkly white diamonds would just look great. Hope this helps mr. ma re

I had just assumed white, but your observations make perfect sense! My fiance will be happy about that... he loves yellow gold, I love white gold (hency my e-ring is white) so this ring will be yellow. That makes way for future gifts of yellow gold stackable rings! YAY!!!

ma re Ideal Rock Total Posts: 1,705 Last Post: 11/24/2009 Member Since: 8/10/2008	Oh and, this probably goes without saying (but it can't hurt to mention) - when sourcing gems make sure garnets are a pair, as well as amethysts, so that they match in hue and tone as much as possible. One more thing; I don't know which setting technique you'd like to employ here, but bezels are generally not a good idea for garnets cause bezels darken the stone's color. But if you'd like to keep it similar to a bezel, I'd suggest going with bar setting, which still allows enough light to enter the stone. BTW, using different setting styles for different stones in this ring would not be a good idea IMO, since you're already working with 3 colors+diamonds+yellow gold so it might overwhelm the whole thing. mr. ma re
