Well I saw Leo's taunting remark Well I live and work in Sitka, A beautiful island located in Southeast Alaska. I am 28 Years old and am half French (Father's side) and Half Italian (Mother's Side). I am a Navy Brat who grew up all over the United States and Overseas. I was born in Jacksonville Florida and have lived in Evanston Illinois, North Carolina, Okinawa Japan, Frisco, Texas, Adak Alaska, Grand Island New York, and finally graduated from a private Catholic School in Niagara Falls New York. I attended Niagara University from 1994-1996 and received an associates degree in Criminal Justice. I decided to take some time off and visit family in Haines, Alaska. The draw and beauty of Alaska has kept me here ever since. I do miss some of the amenities of the city, but the small town feel and down to earth atmosphere is a trade off I would gladly except any day than being a part of the "rat-race" I am in the middle of acquiring my Graduate of Colored Stones certificate in my attempts to complete the distance program through the GIA in route to my GG certificate upon the completion of all the courses. I have a beautiful 9 year old daughter named April I started browsing for a ring a year ago and found this forum. Since I have been inspired to pursue my GG Diploma and have met sooo many wonderful people who share many of the same interest. I am really startled when I think about how much this forum has enriched my general education about stones and has further inspired me to seek out other avenues of broadening my knowledge...This forum has been a great part-time hobby for me in full-filling my own needs of helping people and is a real enjoyable slice of my day when I come home to relax and log on and see the familiar faces and those not so familiar joining and contributing! I enjoy hiking, fishing, swimming, jogging and flying on the nice sunny day's. Alaska has much to offer to the outdoor adventurous type and I particularly like kayaking on the nice days with my family. I would be glad to see any of you if you decided to come this way.... Pictures and captions will follow along with any exciting things which happen which I want to share with all of you... Josh Rioux Haines, Alaska *The Colored Gemstone Nut* |

Great to hear about you, Josh. I'm really looking forward to the pictures. We're hoping to do an Alaskan cruise in the next year or two - we just have to see the aurora borealis before we leave this earth. I understand it's such beautiful country.

A couple weeks ago we had a couple very unique sunrises which had orange, yellow and some shades of pink mixed. I wish I had a high quality camera to capture the real beauty...

Hiya Josh!
I wrote you once before in another thread! I was in Sitka in May of 2002, and loved it! I have an internet, and now a rl friend from there as well, along with his whole family.
Do you know Dave Arnold, from Search and Rescue? I met him a good ten years ago, on Dragon MUD and we've been good friends ever since. We had the 'grand tour' of Sitka with him, and loved it! Sitka is a great town!...I have clips (digital video) of a lot of the scenes you have pictures of, including the Raptor Sanctuary. Come to think on it, Dave and his wife worked there for a while too.

Hey Win,
I don't know Dave by name but would probably know his face being this is such a small town. I am glad you have found the net a great experience. I think there have been many who have benefitted and the possibilities are really limitless. I have really enjoyed becoming a part of this net community..

Just looking at these pictures makes me feel relaxed and meditative. It must be hard to feel stressed there (or easier to come down from it). I think we'll plan a long vacation . . .

I was immediately struck by Grand Island, New York in your autobiography! I had gathered it was quite a small town (but maybe not!). I met a couple from Grand island, New York, in Colombia you see :-). We shared an apartment for a week. They have now moved to Oregon, but neither had ever travelled much or left the US except to go to Canada. Colombia was, thus, a shockeroo! Their luggage got lost and the little boy they were adopting was two while the rest of us had infants. They had no diapers and we couldn't give them any! I took poor Bill out and we scoured Bogota in a quest for big sized diapers (mas grande!). My lousy Spanish seemed like linguistic perfection compared to Bill's. (He was unable to communicate a single thing!) Grand Island of all places...what a coincidence!

Hiya Josh
I just realized you could prolly answer a question for me, since I feel foolish asking the GIA.
Is the colored stone course just one course or a series? I noted it said something about the long distance course being $300. but I wasn't sure if that was just one portion of the 'colored stone' area of study or not.
