Hi!

I am new here, hoping to get some help with a diamond purchase decision from Tiffany and Co. I love Emerald cut diamonds, but am also interested in a Rectangular Modified Brilliant (RMB) they have.

We've narrowed it down to 2 rings. I really like them both, but if anyone can shed light on which is the better stone/better buy, I would really appreciate it!

1. 2.01 ct. Rectangular Modified Brilliant/Measurement: 8.11 x 6.59 x 4.42 mm/Color: I/No fluorescence/Precision of cut: Excellent/Symmetry: Good/Polish: Very Good/Clarity: VVS2/No enhancements/Total Depth %: 67.1%/Table Size %: 67%/Crown Height %: 12.4%/Crown Angle: 33.2 degrees/Pavilion Depth %: 53.4%/Pavilion Angle: 34.3%/Girdle Thickness: Thin to Medium/Girdle Finish: Polished/Culet: None/Price: $26,640/Setting: Platinum (set lower than the Emerald cut)

2. 2.18 ct. Emerald cut/Measurement: 8.71 x 6.79 x 4.30 mm/Color: I/Medium blue fluorescence/Precision of cut: Excellent/Symmetry: Good/Polish: Very Good/Clarity: VS1/No enhancements/Total Depth %: 63.3%/Table Size %: 64%/Crown Angle: 34.0 degrees/Pavilion Depth %: 51.5%/Girdle Thickness: Thin to Medium/Girdle Finish: Polished/Culet: Small/Price: $26,820/Setting: Platinum (set higher than the RMB)

I prefer the higher setting on the Emerald cut, but don't want to base a diamond purchase on the setting.

Incidentally, these prices reflect a 10% discount. I didn't know that Tiffany would do this, but my husband asked, and our sales lady said for a stone over $25,000 they are willing to discount up to 10%.

Any insight on any of this at all? Thank you so much for your help!

Emerald cut. Classic.

What makes you pick that one? Just that it's classic or is there something you see in the specs?

Welcome!

I think you need to use your eyes in this case, these are Tiffany diamonds and they won't provide images that we need to evaluate these shapes to the best of my knowledge, so compare with as many different radiants and EC's as you can to know what appeals to you the most.  You may be aware that VVS is very high clarity and VS will usually be eyeclean, but this is sunject to personal preference.

Nothing is more sacred as the bond between horse and rider...no other creature can ever become so emotionally close to a human as a horse. When a horse dies, the memory lives on because an enormous part of his owner's heart, soul, very existence dies also...but that can never be laid to rest, it is not meant to be...

What about the fluorescence issue? The EC has medium blue fluorescence and the RMB has no fluorescence. My research on the internet has left me a bit confused. Some web sites indicate that it is a bad thing, some a good thing. Some say it makes no difference, etc. etc. etc. Since the EC is a VS1, would the fluorescence help with any potential yellowness?

Again, thank you! I have learned a lot here just poking around!

I'm sure very knowledgable folks will chime in, but you say you "LOVE" emerald cuts - I would trust that emotion and not get distracted by other beautiful choices. Focus on what you LOVE. Good luck!

It's a personal preference. Sometimes it can negatively affect a diamond, but it needs to be strong or really strong fluor to do that and it is rare. Medium won't affect anything really, positive or negative.

And VS1 is the clarity not the color, so fluor won't affect it at all. And it won't really affect the color here either because it isn't strong fluor.

I second Lorelei here, just pick with your eyes. Emeralds are classic and would be my vote based just on the info we have here!
