Hey Ladies,

This didn't happen to me (thank goodness) but I thought it was crazy and wanted to share with you all.  I was in my car earlier and had the radio on when the DJ started talking about proposals.  He said a listener wrote in and told how her boyfriend proposed....which was through a text message  OMG I can't even believe this!  How cold and impersonal can someone be?  The girl said yes but said she was sad because she figured her proposal would be the most romantic thing in her life.  Now she's re-thinking it because she feels like she will be let down with everything else in their lives together.  The DJ even joked that her fiance will text her "happy anniverssary".  Poor girl.  I was totally shocked when I heard this and just had to share it with everyone.
What do you think?

Wow... That's pretty sad. I once had someone break up with me over text message, but I thought it was funny because he was a loser anyways

OK, I just got a guys point of view when I told DH about this. He said "It could be romantic."  Huh? He said "Well, if he was in the same room and she didn't know. If she thought he was out of town or did it at the airport or something."

Hmm. He has a point. Not that I had the most romatic proposal but I have definitely had 7.5 years (so far) of a wonderful marriage!

Omg, I would have said "no" and tell him to ask again when he's serious. My SO has "asked" when we were on the phone and I was complaining about it, but it wasn't a truly serious proposal. It doesn't have to be anything crazy, but, for me, he needs to be there in person with a ring (and maybe on one knee.) A text message? Really? Was this couple in high school because serious adults couldn't possibly take something like that seriously.

No they weren't in high school.  The DJ actually joked about it.  She is 28 but it didn't mention how old her boyfriend is...

I wouldn't have taken it seriously.  It wouldn't even be a matter of saying yes or no, I really would think he was just goofing around.

OMG she's 28? What's he going to do about a ring? Chuck a brass costume diamante at her?
No, wait... a silver ring from a hippie shop. Here, catch!

(Lest you think I'm too b*tchy, my man might have thought I'd have loved a hippie ring... me being a hippie and all at the time...)

Life is so unfair. If she was to complain about the ring, or the proposal, he will likely say that she is too fussy and high expectations!

Yea.. umm... NO.

Not acceptable.

I don't think I would have taken it seriously either, trillionaire.

Kinda goes back to Lara's quote "Guys are like an individual form of democratically elected government .... you get what you put up with!" (Good one!)

If you don't take something like that seriously then he better come up with a different way to ask if he's really serious about proposing!

YEA but in your scenario he's in the same room!! At least they'd be face to face within seconds after he asked!
Although admittedly not my ideal proposal that at least sounds like a thought out plan - not just some random text out of nowhere!

I mean - did she TEXT him back "yes"?

The whole thing just sounds weird.. and impersonal.

Just to add a side note... My SO told me of his buddy proposing to his GF over the phone... They're also in a long distance relationship, and I had to clarify to my SO that it was unacceptable, impersonal, and I would straight up tell him "NO!" I hope the girl said No!

I wonder if there is more to the story.  There are a few scenarios in which a text message would be understandable:

1. as someone up thread said, if he was in the same room
2. if a lot of their courtship took place over text message, maybe he was trying to remind her of that.

I always try to get people the benefit of the doubt.  Then again, he could just be a senseless jerk.

Oh, wow. SO has texted me 'Marry me?' before. But... he was just being cute and he knew it would make me smile (because he says that IRL too). For us, though, it wasn't an official proposal!

Yeah, but he deserved it.
Actually, come to think of it, perhaps that is one reason why things went so bad for her family wise after that - he was sworn to revenge...?

Rob, as the resident man in here, I'll take that as good advice. If only I had told my man his 'rock' wasn't big enough *sigh* I have to confess I did think about it, when he gave me his teensy tiny budget! Luckily, over a few years of marriage he has come to value me much more highly, and I'll make him pay for our tenth anni at the latest (five years to go!!)

Erica, I agree that perhaps there was more to the story - he could have thought it was romantic. And, as someone's husband has already pointed out, it could have been romantic under the right circumstances.

But... she was calling in to talk back radio to complain about it - and it's more fun to take a dim view of the guy, what?

And then a plank in reason broke... Emily Dickinson

I would be disappointed.

Good friends of ours had a pretty uneventful proposal--they were walking through the aquarium and he leaned over and said "Do you want to marry me?" She said "Yes" and then he stuffed the ring in her hand and said "Here, put it on quickly before we make a scene."

They're extremely private, though, and not at all sentimental. They had just built a new home and invited all of our friends over for what we thought was a housewarming party. Word slowly spread that they had just gotten engaged, and when we all got excited they were like "alright, alright, enough."

To each his own, I suppose.

My sister proposed to her now husband over email and it was very romantic :) I'm sure the guy didn't just say hey will you marry me? im sure he included some sentiment. Does it say what he said to her?

you know at first I felt a little bad for her, I mean I'm sure this wasn't how she pictured her proposal, but after thinking about it I feel bad for him. She went on a radio show to complain about her fiance and embarrassed him, I'm sure his friends, family, and coworkers heard and are giving him a hard time over this. You don't know what his intentions were, and he may genuinely not realize it may not be the greatest proposal. If she loves him and wants to marry him she should have discussed her feeling with him, not an entire radio audience. If I were him I'd be reconsidering that proposal, that's not the way I'd want to start an engagement, with public humiliation.
