Hello wise-ones!

I was wondering if someone could tell me whether you could have in theory a 3 stone tension set ring?

I have an oval ruby (.90ct) that I'd luv to tension set to maximise sparkle but I also want trillion side stones in the design. Could this be done somehow?

All I can find is tensions settings with tiny pave side diamonds not any larger stones.

Any thoughts, information would be gratefully received!

Thanks very much.

Sounds dangerous if the trillions have to be set by the point to hold it in.

I don't have a theory, as I'm not expert on diamonds or settings but I did google 3 stone tension rings and found a few. As far as an oval with trillion .. no idea, sorry! It does sound like it would be pretty though! Maybe give WF a call and ask them?!

I didn't find much, but I did find this so it IS possible (atleast with round) ..

Here's another site that I came across that has some pretty neat ideas for tensions rings ..

I think if you want true tension setting on all three stones, you'll have some issues in finding a setting that accommodates substantial side stones.

If you look at www.gelinabaci.com their style TR113 is the only one I could find that has three stones which are truly tension set. Look at the thickness of the side prongs - which is necessary to hold the diamond in - and you can see why it's a tough call to have large stones...

Plus - as AprilBaby noted - tension setting trillions (or any other shape with sharp points) is asking for trouble, even though it's technically possible (just need to dig a cavity in the setting so that the pressure is not on the point - which they do anyway even for rounds).

One option may be that of having a semi-bezel flush with the ring surface and a thin bridge underneath for the trillions, coupled to a true tension setting for the oval. Not a full tension setting - but it could achieve 90% of the look with much lower risk.

Thank you for your advise!

Whats about is just the centre stone was tension set and the trillions were bezel set into the side of the shank? Do you think that would work?

Wish i could find a pic to describe it!

Hi HotPozzum, there are a few tension set rings here, the 4th one on the page below is the closest I can find:

http://www.thefind.com/query.php?query=engagement+tension+set+ring&filter%5Bcategoryorder%5D=BAEXDwkZAAA%253D&filter%5Bqpcookie%5D=%24%24K87ILy9ITE8tqSxItTXUAQA%3D&filter[pagenum]=1

It's the Edward Mirell black titanium tension ring. This is the kind of thing I'd pictured from your description, but with trillion sides instead of rounds, which I think would look awesome!!! I hope that helps you!

As well as stresses on the stones, you need to think of the stress on the metal - I think tension settings compress between 50 and 80 kg... which is not trivial.

You really need to talk to a tension settings expert - call GelinAbaci or Kretchmer and ask them about it. I think if anyone can do it, they can. Alternatively, contact Danhov, or Niessing - but I don't know if they deal directly with consumers.
