hi everyone! my boyfriend and i are just beginning our diamond search and would appreciate any help we can get. we've done our share of internet research, however, some things (ok, quite a few things) are still quite foggy and we have quite a few questions so bear with us. so far, here's the story. originally, i liked the lucida from tiffany's but upon closer inspection, i didn't like the thickness of the lucida band with the 1-1.25 carat size that we are looking at. i still love the shape of the lucida diamond itself but discovered that it's not possible to just buy the lucida diamond alone. so on we went to another jewelry store where i saw an elara diamond which i really liked. once again, however, i didn't like the elara band but i did see a different platinum band there that the jeweler assured me could be set in more of a mid-profile manner (even though it would normally have been a high profile ring). i'm wondering if this is standard practice (i had originally asked for a low profile ring because i need to wear gloves for work) as i can imagine potential light distribution problems if the diamond is set lower than it was originally intended for a particular band. any thoughts on the band? upon further research, i learned of the dream diamond and the flanders cut diamond that has similiar shape to the elara diamond and now i'm utterly confused as to what the differences are between the three. from what i gathered, flanders seems to either be the old name for the elara or the "unbranded" name (still unclear as to which one is correct or if either is correct). could someone clarify the difference between the elara and flanders? now, we also learned that the elara and dream diamond are branded diamonds but are they worth it in terms of quality? Because of the shape of the diamonds that we are considering, we were unclear as to how to clearly evaluate the specs to check for quality. also, we have yet to find a store that sells both the elara and dream diamond as we would actually like to compare the two side by side but it seems impossible at this point in time. so what are the pros and cons of the elara versus dream versus flanders? info on pricing would be helpful also (i'm assuming the elara and dream diamond should be set since they are branded?) any help here would be greatly appreciated as we'd like to make an educated decision before buying. sorry for the long-winded email but we were very excited to have stumbled upon such a big group of knowledgable people all in one place! thank you in advance for your time! PS: any locals have any advice for jewelry stores in the sf bay area? anywhere from walnut creek to sf to san jose is acceptable. -cheryl |

The elara and flanders are basically the same thing. The elara had a patent that was just thrown out in a big lawsuit. Elara is appealing, but currently the patent is void. As for the others, follow the links.

Those are good threads to look at. Also, one point of clarification--it won't matter if the setting is high or low. Light enters a diamond from the top and the more brilliant a diamond is the more light is bounced back out of the top. So, a poorly cut diamond isn't going to benefit from a higher setting and a well-cut diamond can be bezel set.

Eewww, Gary. As far as I'm concerned, if a diamond is ugly I want to see as little as possible. Sort of like an unattractive guy shouldn't be wearing Speedos on the beach!  From the technical side, though, would love if you could elaborate from your professional perspective. Always want to learn more!

THis is exactly the question I have arrived at after a five-month long struggle with Elara and the jeweler who sold me a three-stone ring. I had the same questions you are asking and I am going to share the results of my research on the thread "Problems with Elara". THere is so little information out there on Elara that I decided to post my debacle so we could start to get to the bottom of this flanders/elara question. Consumers have a right to information - especially if you are about to pay full retail - as to what you are buying and what it really means. Good Luck and I hope the info. I post on that thread will help you in your decision. PS - I am going to look at hearts of fire Dream this weekend, mostly because I want to see just how expensive this stone really is - and to compare it to Elara. I will be in NY next week to look at Flanders and start getting an idea of what I will do next. You are very lucky that you do not prefer the Elara setting because that is what I loved about enough to fight to keep that ring for five months. I have returned the ring! I actually called HOF about two dream diamonds that are listed on the site. There is a tel number listed....but the guy was shocked when he found out I was not a retailer (after he gave me a price!)...I told him the tel # was listed right there on the site...Whatever- the quote I got for a 1.75 G si1 Dream was a bit more than 17500. Which is just ridiculous!
