Hey, you see something new everyday. This might be the beginning of a new trend!

I was just invited via phone to a relative's wedding. She and I are close. After I accepted, she told me oh well, it is $150 something per person plus tax and service fee and we are requesting the funds before the wedding date. Please call FI with your credit card if it is easier. If not, cash is OK...

That's it, I'm eloping... I guess I left you guys speechless!!!

Well, it gets better... I just got a call from her mother, who is all excited about the "celebration" and asked me if I could help with photography.

I live in NYC so it is rather customary that people give money at weddings. Please keep that in mind so the following statement willl make sense. Out of all the stupid stuff I had to hear, the highlight was that I was told that paying for our meals before hand it's quite the same thing as bringing an envelope with money to the wedding. Priceless.

Holy smokes, I can't blame my friend's mother. She condones everything her daughter does.

I really can't. That would start a whole lot of beef within our families. It has happened before! She is one of those who cannot do wrong! I usually end up being the biatch ... LOL...

Just taking pics swimmer. FI bought a brand new SRL camera, which he was showing off like the little boy he is.
I think that's what she was thinking when she asked me. Luckily, he is on a business trip and cannot attend!

Chargger --- Yes, most people will never do something like this. Talk about sh*tting on your own wedding!!!!
Sugary --- Trust me, I'm beginning to think she is not pulling this one off on everyone. How can you tell your FI's boss to pay for his meal?  LOL
April20--- Way out of control this is!!!
TheBigT --- You bet I'm getting a receipt. BTW the food better be good. If not I want a refund!
ItalianHC --- I wish I could skip it but I said yes b/f this whole thing went down.
BlackPD --- LOL . My heart did stop too along with the rest of my body!
EBree - I'm still shocked. Rude it is.
Black Paw --- WTF it is !

EM1- That part I'm not sure about. They are not getting one from me, that's for sure!

Ew. That story just makes me feel sick.

I probably would have kept it cool while speaking to her, but then I would absolutely not attend the wedding . . . and forget about sending a gift!

Firstly that is really tacky I know weddings are expensive and all but WTF!!!!!!

This may not come out the right way but it is safe to assume (though not expected) people will bring a gift to a wedding, and if it is customary in NY for people to give money as a gift wouldn't she be recouping some of the cost as is? I don't condone what she did (read first statement) but is she possibly trying to make a profit out of her wedding?

I feel like I have now heard almost everything LOL

I hear you gals but I shall worry no moe. FI has vetoed my attendance to the pre-paid wedding. He is livid!!!
On the other hand, I should give this girl the link to smurfys lovely STD's so she can put the price per person in the front of the ticket and charge accordingly!!!LOL

On the bright side, $150 per person for a NYC wedding isn't that bad. Mine's a pretty low-key place and it's more than that when you figure in the tax, etc.

And the Pierre starts at something like $500. Can you imagine?

There was one episode of one of those wedding shows where the couple rented an ATM for their reception (I think because it was a cash bar) - maybe you'll see one of those!

The "admission fee" is of $150 plus tax and gratuity so it comes up to $190 or so for one of those dinner cruise deals. That's what she is doing.

I hear you about prices. The best quote I've gotten so far, for a somewhat decent meal + appetizers and open Bar is $165pp plus 8.38% tax and 20% gratuity. It comes up to $211.83pp. Crazy, crazy, crazzzyyyy. I'm starting to think I suck at negotiating!

I've seen the episode with the ATM, I guess they were trying to hint something. LOL.

Lesco...first of all, your friend's thing is INSANE....

but may I suggest a destination wedding to Central Illinois?!? Reading your last post made my heart stop...I thought our $17 for dinner, $4 for appetizers, and $2.75 pp for a champagne toast, and approx $12 pp bar tab was obnoxiously high! I can't imagine... clearly, that doesn't explain your friend's behavior, but the cost of a wedding in the city is mindblowing!
