This weekend was a disaster( not a total disaster, but not as I had planned)! My FI , I, my family, and his family were going to the Inn at Mystic (Ct) for the weekend to celebrate our engagement. It wasn't the place or the accomodations, but the weather that was a disaster. It took us well over 5 hours to get there where normally should have been around 2.5 hrs. No ice storm, but severe flooding and power outages. Oh, plus tons of accidents. The other point of the trip was to see if this is where I would like to hold my wedding next year (late Oct to late Dec mark). What I liked about Mystic was that the airport is less than 10 miles away and there is Amtrak service to and from NY. But now I am rethinking, because of the weather. My future in-laws made a suggestion that I am seriously contemplating and my FI as well as my parents are on board about this. FI's parents are members of the Fisher Island Club near Miami. http://www.fisherislandclub.com/club/scripts/library/view_document.asp?GRP=6151&NS=PC&APP=80&DN=p_catering&gclid=COeqpM7uwpcCFQw9GgodYk1zSg FI's parents took us out for dinner there during Thanksgiving week and it is gorgeous. I checked it out further on-line (also liked the fact that it is 77 degrees there today) and it has a beautiful setting. So I am nixing (for now anyway) having a wedding in the NY Ct areas and we will be checking this one out instead in the next few weeks. It is close to the Miami airport, but the only drawback is that you can only get to Fisher Island by ferry (runs 24 hrs per day), but I will assume a good number of people coming to the wedding will stay on the island, plus I will get to keep the wedding closer to the 100 that I was hoping for. Keep your fingers crossed, because I have a strong feeling this is the place. |

Hi Sugary, Sorry the weather wasn't cooperating this weekend in Mystic. It is a very lovely area of CT. I just wanted to mention, to help you fully evaluate your decision, that I don't think any of your guests would actually use the airport that you mentioned is 10 miles away (is that in Groton?). People would more likely fly into Hartford (BDL) or Providence airports. I'm not sure what airport is 10 miles away, but it must be a very small one, and would likely be cost-prohibitive to fly into. Good luck with your new location. It sounds promising. The weather sounds nicer/more predictable too. CT would probably be a good choice for a late September/early October wedding because the foliage would be nicest then.

I went to a wedding once at Mystic Seaport and there was no AC...a problem even there in August. It was hotter than heck. The AC wasn't broken, it didn't exist. Just something to consider in all venue evaluations

So you are switching from CT to FL? That is a huge move!

It is a small airport : New London/Groton. No commercial flights. Otherwise they would fly into NY or (Hartford) CT and drive or Amtrak it in or even take a ferry from LI. But I am trying to plan a wedding for 100 or less, while my parents want 300+. That is why I am looking for something a little out of the way to keep it smaller. Since I want to have the wedding next year, (late fall and early winter is doable), I don't want the weather to interfere since I will not be having it close to home. That's why I think I may go with Fisher Island. It will make me and FI happy to have the kind of wedding we want and not the kind my parents want. (I should add I am the only daughter and my parents eloped so they want to do something grand and I do not) To tell you the truth. eloping would be easier! I have never had so much stress in my life before just trying to decide on things that will make everyone happy. I hope all your decisions come much more easily!

It is a huge move, but originally I wanted to get married in Hawaii and FI said that parents and family probably would not make that trip. That's understandable. FI parents live in Miami, and my parents are willing to go there (They'd go anywhere for that matter). I want it somewhat out of the way to keep it small, to make me happy, and help me keep my sanity as my mom calls at least 20xs a day or emails me to give me suggestions. My parents now live in LI, I grew up in northern NJ and NY, have lived in Pittsburgh (went to college there) moved back to NYC to attend grad school, lived in NJ again, live in Philly area (currently) and am planning to buy a house in CT (we are pretty sure) next year. I don't really care where I get married, I just want something memorable.
