I recently bought a memory foam mattress topper and I slept so well on it - it was wonderful.  What was not wonderful was the terrible odor from it.  It permeated everything, even my PJs.  I had to return this memory foam pad.

Does anyone know any memory foam pads that don't smell like chemicals??  Any help is appreciated as I really loved it, just not the smell!

Thanks.

They all smell like that for the first few days. It should completely dissipate after a week. Did yours not?

I have a memory foam mattress, and I it.

Mine smelled at first too.  I read the reviews though, and the reviewers said the smell went away under a week.  How long did you have yours for?

Beacon: We bought one for our 5th wheel. It smelled for awhile, then went away. We love sleeping on it.

I agree with the others.  We have a memory foam mattress and when we first got it, it did smell pretty awful -- like chemicals.  It did go away though, and now there's nothing wrong with it.  I think it will be okay...

I bought a Tempurpedic mattress and it smelled like that too - went away pretty quickly and never another problem.

You might have taken yours back too soon. . . try again!  The memory foam makes for a wonderful, good night sleep!

There is some convincing concern over the raise of endogenous hormones in society from plastics, such as the polyurethane that most memory foam is made from and the link to reproductive disorders in both males and females. Even though the smell may go away after a week, polyurethane beds will continue to off-gas their chemicals from anywhere from 1-10 years.
You can read a condensed version in The Green Guide.

A chemical free alternative with a similar quality is to look for "natural latex" mattress pads.

Short google search which also mentions the wool kind...

We did an extensive search this Sept when buying a mattress, but I still don't feel like an expert. Just that for new purchases, I would stay away from something known to have a higher toxicity.

Wow, that is really something to think about. I wish they had listed brands that carry the "untreated, organic cotton or wool mattress with a natural latex core".

I've looked at mattresses and simply could not decide as there is no clear cut answer. I just bought a memory foam mattress pad, and I may consider returning it.

~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~
I only aired it out for two days.  But thing is, I think it was not good for me.  I had a runny nose and, even though this sounds gross, I felt like I could taste those chemicals.  I  just couldn't take it.
I did a google search on the health issues and scared myself.  Gosh, it is quite a lot to think about.   Now I want one of those organic mattresses.
