So, the bomb dropped today...during our Christmas trip to Pittsburgh we'll be taking a family picture (just what I wanted to do )From what I know, this family photo thing has never been done before. And, it seems like it could be a total free for all as far as clothing goes...however, my FIL warned my husband that we *must* bring nice clothing (like we'd show up in torn jeans or something...)...my husband told my FIL that I would probably just wear a black dress, and he'll wear black dress pants and a button up--but that we're not going to buy new outfits for this picture so we hope it isn't a matchy-matchy thing. So, my question is...do you think it would be okay for me to wear an above the knee black 3/4 sleeve Gap sweater dress and black tights? Could I get away with a bold shoe, like red or silver? I tend to be a little more "fashion forward" than the rest of the family...I wear lots of black clothing, I wear bolder makeup--meaning, colors other than brown, I have a modern trendy hair style...my MIL and SIL are over 40 and more conservative--think ankle lenght skirts, cordoroy, ect.... I obviously don't want to be black sheep forever captured on film, so I want to look alright...so, do you fashion aware women have any input or suggestions? ____________________________ Remember to keep your words soft and sweet...you may have to eat them someday. |

I say go for it! Black clothing with just a pop of color sounds just about right. :)

I think a small splash of color, like shoes, is tasteful! Plus, you don't want to be head-to-toe in black and give off a funereal impression, right? Although I favor silver over red...it's color, and different, but still elegantOf course, this is from me, where I have family pics in my parents' home taken when I was a child....and we were all dressed, very matchy, in denim.... yeah....::shudder::

I think that it sounds nice as well. I wear a lot of black too and love wearing red shoes or something like that with it to liven the outfit up.

Thank you, thank you EricaR, Brown.Eyed.Girl, and Bee*, you all gave me the confidence to push forward with my outfit choice. I know it probably seemed a little lame to be posting this question here, but as someone who can never seem to get it *just right* with my in laws, this issue makes me literally sweat. I feel much more comfortable now. ____________________________ |

Date: 12/11/2008 11:06:18 AM Lets be honest...that is entirely possible...except she was *given* this photo op as an early Christmas gift, otherwise I probably would be taking the photo....

In light of the background, Italia, head-to-(ankle) black might be a little hard and dark... esp. if you're already feeling like the black sheep. (Besides, matte black doesn't photograph particularly well.) I'd go back to the drawing board to find something that still feels like you, but not *quite* so black. Do you have any awesome pieces or accessories you love in your existing wardrobe that might be called into service? f-d-l

A slightly more conservative, less hipster look would omit the black tights

We do family photos every couple of years and usually have a dress code so it looks good. This year it's jeans, no sneakers, and either a navy or red shirt. It usually looks pretty good. I think head to ankle black might be hard to photograph.
