Hi all, FI's Dad passed away late October and FI is the executor of his will and it stipulates that basically once the home is sold any contents of value are to be liquidated and shared among the his children. This includes 4 boys. While cleaning up the home we found a very large gents yellow gold ring shaped into a lion's head with what looked to be two red stones as the eyes and its mouth was open and holding what appeared to be a diamond. No stamp on the gold or any kind of makers mark whatsoever. We live in Canada so I took the piece to one of our reputed BM stores Birks and had them do an appraisal and just got it back. So the red stones in the eyes are glass not rubies or anything and the stone held in the lion's mouth is a diamond simulant but the ring itself is genuine 14k YG and over 35 grams of it. Appraised value is $1800 USD. So my question and hope someone can please help how do we now go about liquidating this and getting some cash to go to the estate. I realize I will likely never get $1800 for it but it would be nice to not have to sell it for a song to be able to get some decent amount that the boys can divide. I've checked not a single son wants to keep it. It is rather clumsy and it actually doesn't fit anyone. Right now only craigslist and ebay come to mind is there anywhere else I could sell this and get a decent return? Thanks in advance for your help |

I would call around to all the jewelers in your area and ask if any are buying gold pieces (for the gold), some do. If you stike out there, you might contact GOG. I know I've read on their site in the past that they bought gold pieces, but I can't find that exact quote now. They are located in Long Island, New York. Ask to speak to Jon. http://goodoldgold.com/ContactUs/ And good luck! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

I'd be a little wary of the $1800 appraisal for a ring with a sim and glass stones. It would take a LOT (like ounces, not grams) of gold to come even close to that. My guess would be closer to $600 retail. No idea on resale.
