Now, this is interesting pricing! Forget about cut (both good), and think color:

Radiant, 1.56ct, fancy gray-blue, SI2: 70k WWW
Round, 1.2 ct, fancy gray-blue, SI1: 16k WWW

I truly hope no one will came with the explanation that per carat prices for these goods jump 4 times from the 1-1.5 ct bracket to the 1.5-1.6 one! But I am still very, very eager to hear your take on this issue!

Being that cuts are equal (if they truly are..btw that second link doesn't go to a product page but just a general website)....maybe the rarity of the actual COLOR? For example, are there different types of fancy gray blue..some more rare than others? I have no idea....just a thought.

The second stone (a very well cut round, as far as fancy cuts go) moved on the 'sold' section of that website... in days!

MARA, your comment would make sense if there was a way to tell the difference, but there is not. The 'quality' of a blue shows in how much gray is in it, and, from this point of view, the radiant is truly worse. But color grades for fancies are much, much wider than for whites (as you all know) so someone will have a hard day justifying that rate hike. By the way, the best blue I've ever seen (a good near 1ct sapphire cousin, as I thought diamonds can never be) still was not anywhere as expensive as the radiant above. Unfortunately, there is no way to show you that stone, but on the fancydianomds.net site, under the 'blue diamonds' menu there is a blue pear nearing that impossible color shade: at .5ct is still 'cheap' (compared to other quote).

However, what I find striking with these prices is not only inconsistency, but also the incredible hype built around colored goods in the US and the resulting costs. I enjoyed following diamond buying habits around the globe (ok, not ALL around), and this is a funniest fact so far!

In my experience any diamond that shows blue is horrifically expensive. This is going back to the mid eighties - the first time I remember actually seeing one and knowing the price.
If you saw a blue 1.00 radiant that looked like a sapphire, and it was a lot less than 72K, there was something amiss somewhere.

In the case of Grey Blues it really depends on exactly how much grey there is.
Usually, to my eye, grey is a horrible color in a diamond- but anything blue is , again, stupid high priced, and one in a billion rare. If the radiant diamond really has a strong blue tinge ( it's hard to see it the photo, but it might) that would explain the difference in price if the round had more grey.

Yes, there was something amiss with that blue... the cut. The object was a weird 0.86ct flattish baguette looking like an average quality sapphire (or glass chip, not Ceylon color) but still bluer than any other carbon crystal I've came accross. There could have been other things wrong too, but I did have the piece re-certified at the time (1999), so I have no idea what.

Ana,

that round diamond is to-die-for! It is also a good example of a nice 60/60 make. Absolutely incredible!

The round is a pretty color! And, I think the radiant should be rephotographed unless the photo on the icestore site is the best and most representative.

About the IGI round blue diamond, is there any reason why the seller of this stone would not get a GIA certificate rather than the IGI certificate? It seems like it has a significant color, value, and size that it would be worth the cost to get a GIA certificate - even if it would only be for color of origin.

It would be nice to see a better pic of the other diamond. That round is facinating!!

Why use a big word when a diminutive word would be succinct!

Hi Pq,

There was a link in the first post of this thread, but here is a pic of the other diamond that was being compared.
