I pay a shade under $5K and my house is worth less than $200K. The school system here is supposed to be great. I don't have kids yet so I wouldn't know but I hope it truly is considering how much I'm paying for it right now!
I pay more taxes than my parents do and their house is easily worth 3 times what mine is.

Ah the joys of being a homeowner in PA.

My bf's condo is about $250,000 and is around $3400 in taxes.
My parents is $375,000 and $4500. -which is going up, again, because of the school referendum that passed, but our community is in the top 25 places to raise kids. Blue ribbon schools.

Our property is worth ~$400,00, and taxes for 2008 were $4300. The taxes here reflect the fact the we have little in the way of industry.

While the actual property would be worth much more in Toronto, our taxes would be much less.

yea, its 90% school tax the federal lawsuit raised it a ton and the schools still stink.
Go 15 miles any direction and the taxes are about 1/2 that.

The past two years it was $432 a year.  I think it went up to around $1200 this year.

My home is tax abated for the first 8 years, so my taxes will go up in increments every year.  One of the perks of buying a new home in NY I guess.

yes and no but not really because of taxes mainly because of the lack of jobs and the bad schools.
The lower cost of the houses offsets the tax a bit.
Going to one of the lower tax areas a 100k house here would sell for around 125k there.

Mine is about what Tgal's is. We live in a bi-state area, and if we crossed the Mississippi into IL, we'd be paying about a grand more in property taxes for a house of the same value (schools, roads, etc being completely similar). However, income taxes are apparently higher on the IA side, so it supposedly evens out.

You guys probably wouldn't believe me if I told you how much the taxes were on our place. The taxes are expensive here because Tenafly has one of the top school systems in the state. On the downside, I'm even sure if I will be sending my kids to public school . . .

Dang, I thought I had it bad.... $4800 on assessed value of $375k (market value fluctuates between 500k and 600k -- we've been here a long time).

My SILS house is $1500 on $250k in AZ.

wow! i'm jealous of all of you! we pay $12,500 per year, house value about 350,000. in this area 350,000 gets you a smaller, older home. most of that goes to the school system which isn't so great once you hit the higher grade levels. i am in Northeast nj. we are saving for private school for our son, or plan to move before he hits middleschool. it truly is sickening!

About £1300/year on a rental property.

Edit: Oh, sorry, that's council/local tax. Nevermind.

Holy cow! Are you in a developing area? When we were house hunting we found that the suburbs farther out from the city, which are still developing and growing, had much higher taxes than the older suburbs closer to the city which are already fully established and no longer building up. We loved a house valued at $350,000, but the taxes were nearly $11,000 so we walked away.

We ended up closer to the city, and although our dollar didn't stretch nearly as far as it would have farther out, our taxes are much lower. The schools are much better in our area than in the higher tax areas, too.

I live in Indiana.  Taxes on $160,000 house are around $1,200 but schools are lousy and I pay $3K more to send my son to a Blue Ribbon private school.  So, I guess taxes are really $4,200 if I add in school.  But considering I need to stay in the area for now, I love where I live and wouldn't trade it for the better school system areas of my county.

We pay about $1,400 for our house that they claim is worth $185,000 in Phoenix AZ. They're selling for less than that now though

Overall the schools in Phoenix suck, but I hear the ones for my neighborhood are pretty good.
