I have a dilemma and I would like to hear what you guys have to say. I'm getting engaged soon and I'm in the process of picking out an engagement ring. I've always told myself that when I get married I'm going to have to have the Tiffany Lucida cut diamond ring. I saw it on their catalog a long time ago and fell in love with it the first time when I saw. Just recently I went to the shop and saw the Lucida ring in person. It was not what I expected. The zoomed picture of the ring on their website looked alot prettier, but the cut of the diamond is very unique. If you look at it directly you can see there is a star in the middle of the ring. The way they cut the diamond it forms a star inside the diamond. Well, I wanted a Vs1, color F, and at least one carat ring from them. My budget on the ring is $15000.00 or a little over is fine. My problem is, if I buy the Lucida cut I can only get a carat with all the ratings I want, but it's a TIFFANY. IF I go to Bailey Banks and Biddle, I can get a ring with a Vs1, color F, and the carat is around 1.19 to 1.50, but it's not a TIFFANY but it's the Linz cut (Bailey Banks and Biddle's exclusive cut). I don't know if I should get the 1 carat Tiffany ring or get a bigger carat but it's not a tiffany, the ratings won't matter because I'm getting the same ratings for both. Some people tell me I should get a Tiffany because it's a Tiffany. Some people say the quality and size of the diamond is very important. It doesn't matter if it's a Tiffany or not if the diamond is heck small. People would be more dazzled with a bigger diamond regardless. So I'm stuck and don't know which to pick. I'm more of a brand name person too, so I would like to have the Tiffany but I feel like I'm paying too much for a one carat. If I can get a 1.30 carat from Tiffany then it's perfect, but then the price will be about $18,000-$20,000.PLEASE HELP!

Sounds like you won't be satisfied with your ring unless it is from Tiffany, so I say get the Tiffany. Personally, I am the exact opposite -- I would rather pick the best diamond for the money and have a ring custom made. After following the Tiffany threads on this site for some time, I have come to realize that people who love brand names will never see things the way I do. Get the Tiffany. |

---------------- Only you can answer this one. You have to decide which is more important to you: the name or the carat weight. Most folks on this board would point out that carat weight is obvious, the name is not. In general, people aren't going to know it's a Tiffany unless you tell them, and do you really want to be saying, "it's a Tiffany" every time someone looks at it? If you're comfortable with that, fine. There are some other branded cuts similar to the Lucida, but most of them are about as expensive.

Since you like the look of the Lucida and its not a round brilliant, as LG noted, alot of the other similarly shaped stones will be as pricey. It'd be hard to find a 'really great deal on something similar' here. In that case, just get what you love. Tiffany IMO is overpriced but if you are JUST going for the name, then yes the Linz or whatever BBB calls it will not have the same clout as the Lucida. But if you get that Tiffany stone, be sure to tell EVERYONE you meet that it's a Tiffany, or else what's the point of buying it?
Haaaaaaaaaaa.
If I had my heart set on a look like that, I would go for SIZE and CUT. Not brand. But it's a preference thing. Good luck!

I felt the same way (in love) with the Lucida cut when I saw it in a catelog...then I saw it in person and was SO disappointed! What I love about diamonds is the sparkle and colored light return. If I had a budget of $15k for the stone I would buy the 1.70 I SI1 H&A cut round that Johnathan at www.goodoldgold.com has for sale, and get the Tiffany style mounting that Superbcert.com sells. I guarantee that stone would blow away anything that Tiffany sells. I like being able to see concrete light performance, the IC2 results, and having a GIA cert on a stone. That means more to me than the Tiffany & Co. logo inside the band where no one else can see it. But hey! That's just my taste. ![]() TheDiamondangel |

To answer the question in your subject line - I would not pick the Tiffany. However, as another poster pointed out, it doesn't seem like you'll be satisfied with a non-Tiff ring. So - you either have to lower your expectations of size/colour/clarity, or up your budget to get the carat weight you're looking for. Sursum Corda! |

Anital, Try to check out the Lucere. Enter "Diamond Photography Competition" in the search field here and scroll down to see the most gorgeous picture of one. "It is very similar to the Lucidia, but with an added step in the cut, and for a lot less money. There are a handfull of websites that carry the stone, but Goodoldgold will use different scopes that measure brilliance, fire, and light return. I was in Tiffany's this past weekend, and the salesman told me they were "too good to use scopes," but personally, I would like to know if MY $15000 investment leaked (light.) I too agree with the others above, I would rather my money went more into the stone than the name, but if the name is where it's at for you, then you have to follow your heart. Hope it helps, It pays to do your homework.

Since you asked, ;-) I would take a big, beautiful sparkler over a smaller Tiffany any day.

---------------- But, what would you trully like instead? Maybe 1.3 is ok, but my feeling is that your stone could go signifficantly bigger if it wasn't for the brand and specs. Not that I have anything against brand-name jewelry! Some designs are really unique and virtually impossible to repeat, and those are what make the name and fame of the brand. I believe that Lucida is not what made Tiffany famous and, more importandly, can be closely reproduced. So? So, if you are wearing your small Lucida it will most likely show it's pedigree to you alone, given that quite a few people would not go for paying the brand premium and imply that so did you. On the other hand, a larger, simmilarly cut stone would look like the Lucida cut for anyone. Of course, if you know you are going to hate that large, wonderful diamond, just because YOU know it has never been in Tiffany's stock... This is a completely different matter. After all, the Lucida is beautiful, but there are other cuts very close and many other fancy cuts competing with it, I guess...

Thanks for all your inputs. My boyfriend agrees with all you guys, and I agree too. But I was just iffy. From the start, my parents also said the same thing what you guys all mentioned. Majority of the people would tell me the same thing, it's just that now I'm more confident with my decision. Thanks alot, I feel like I'm getting close to the ring I want.

With enough reading & research, you will come to know what a good, great, ideal cut really is all about. You will then be able to choose with confidence that you have purchased the diamond of your dreams & with your own effort. Sure, its easy for the Tiffany cert & guarantee that they dont sell below this or below that to give you confidence, but you can learn all that yourself & choose a bigger, nicer stone for what you would at Tiffany. As you can tell, I'm not a fan of Tiffany's. I have a Scott Kay setting, 99% of the people looking at it tell me how lovely my white gold ring is & leave it at that. I dont ever correct them or tell them I just dont see the point, & yet I'm wearing a designer peice that comes with a pretty heafty premium & no one cares. hahaha All people ever say is, "wow, look at the size of that thing". LOL LOL Thats just fine by me. SO, if its THAT important or you feel some form of bliss to tell people that your ring is from Tiffany, go for it. You could check out Johathans site @ Good Old Gold for the closest to the Lucida cut. Also, Jan & Brad of Diamond Brokers Of Florida have come across an octigonal shaped diamond that exhibits H&A & sparkles like a round. Its pretty nice to see actually. Email them & I'm sure they email you back. If I had a pic of the stone, I'd put it up so you know what I'm talking about. Judy :-)

When people see your fiancee/wife's ring, they will not know if it is from Tiffany's or from JoBob's jewelers. They will notice the beauty and the size. I would forget the T&Co that is hidden inside the shank of the ring and get the most beautiful and largest diamond you can afford. You might also find a better deal here with the internet vendors. dimonbob, GG |

For 15K, I'd rather get a 1.5 ct, drop dead gorgeous, non-Tiffany stone. But I don't give a whit about brand names......as long as the quality of the product is the same (which it is), I'd rather get more bang for the buck.
But I'm not you. You are candid in saying that name brands do matter to you, and if that is the most important thing, then I'm sure you'll be willing to sacrifice the weight and/or color/clarity to get the Tiffany.
Your decision, and I'd think about it this way: 5 or 10 years from now, what do you think you'll regret more.....not getting the Tiffany, or not getting a more substantial stone?

Buy the non-tiffany, and with the money that you will save, buy a nice necklace from Tiffanys! ![]() Seirously, I used to think Tiffany's was the way to go (esp. since the local jewelers didnt carry anything in stock that was comparable) but the name is so expensive.

I might pay a premium for Tiff's, but I would NOT pay a premium for BaileyBanks&Biddle! These decisions are yours alone to make!

By your anser, I couldn't tell what you decided to do ... well, are you going for the Tiffany's????? I agree after reading your post that you will probably be bothered if you don't get the stone from Tiffany's and should probably go ahead and go with the brand name (although I would rather have a bigger stone for the same money). What about looking at a round brilliant at Tiffany's??? The sparkle is amazing, and maybe you won't be dissapointed with your choice of shapes, but you will still be able to get the Tiffany's ring? Looking forward to hearing about your decision! Fancy |
