Forrest Gump...both undisputably excellent yet the plots are completely different, i.e. he is an astronaut, harvard dropout, stars in a movie with Raquel Welch, becomes a chess champion as well as a professional wrestler and harmonica player, and gets captured by pygmies. You can see why they toned it down a bit for the movie...
