I recently got this set from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001C9LG60 Now... I totally expected to get what I paid for (which is to say, not much) but I was pleasantly surprised. I was able to pick out the inscription on my .836ct using the 30x, though with some difficulty... which could ...

sure, can definitely be the case. the higher the clarity grade, the more the rarity... it''s also possible that the cutter made an attempt to dodge some inclusions in the rough, which would result in more rough being cut away, again increasing the price. if you think that''s drastic... take a look a...

<----- that sucker is a .836 g vs1 ACA (more pics in the link below)... there might be a visual difference between that and a .9 or a 1.0, but it will be slight. pull out a ruler and try to divide a mm in half... it's less than that, over the entire diameter of the diamond. for me, it wasn't enough ...

while that is all true, it is still definitely a matter of personal preference... we generally recommend that if you haven''t seen an accurately graded and well-cut J in person, to take the time to go to a few stores and look at them. everyone has a different color tolerance, and it''s best to know ...

hi sarah and welcome to PS!

ditto SC, the stone looks great. you should probably put the stone on reserve if you''re considering buying, as it happens from time to time that people jump on stones that others are considering. also, what are your thoughts on the J/VS1 color/clarity combination?

from my entirely non-scientific sampling of a few diamonds, the PS discount is 3%, and the wire discount is 2%... and you can get both, so a maximum of 5% off.

based on previous experience, that applies to ACAs; you can also get the wire discount on the setting.

this is a RB, right? that depth is way too high (by about 10% iirc) and crown height way too low (by about 6-7%, again, iirc)... if RB, really not that great a cut...

eta table is off by about 12% as well.

how big is the chip and was the stone graded with it? do you have pictures?

my initial reaction is that it isn''t so simple as to just polish off a chip if you want the diamond to stay in proportion to the rest of the shape... btw, which shape is it?

A knot is a crystal that comes to the surface of the stone. In bad cases, it can have a greater risk of chipping and/or falling out, creating a cavity (even worse).

Clouds that affect performance are also annoying... but I agree, a particularly bad crystal/knot/cavity can easily be the ''worst''.
