the mall stores where I live sell okay stuff. The prices are even somewhat competitive. After doing research and reading about how mall stores suck I was expecting my trip to the mall to be a big joke. Well, to my surprise, it seems like some of the stores were not so bad. One of the stores I visite... |

one of the good things about getting engaged young is that people won't expect you to be getting a big budget e-ring. You'll find that the more you research and talk here, the more your budget will increase. I say, set a budget in stone right away, don't compromise it, and get the best possible ring... |

it is a very valid concern. Accuracy in any information is very important, you are by no means, "way off base". |

someone please explain "spread" on the HCA
I was wondering what the spread rating on the HCA meant. What is spread and how does it affect light return? Also what is the difference between an "excellent" spread vs. a "good" spread? I kind of asked a similar question below, but I think it got lost in the thread. Thanks. |

My spread on the HCA received "Very Good". The other scores received Excellent. How does "spread" affect light return? Is it only a score for the visual maximization of carat size? How big of affect does spread have on the HCA score? My HCA score was 1.2, I wonder what it would have been if the spre... |

justme, I do see your logic. Perhaps I would then only recommend insuring it at appraisal value if the appraisal was just modestly over the purchase price. At least this way if you lose your ring, you'll have a little flexibility with where you can get your replacement and how long it will take to g... |

I was talking to Jewelers Mutual and they told me to use the appraisal because if the store I bought it from goes out of business, or if the dealer can't get me the same deal, then I wouldn’t be able to replace the stone. I say go for the appraised value, unless the appraised value is absurdly high. |

I think the only SI2 I would buy would be a H&A. The difference in price between an SI2 and an SI1 can be tremendous. If that diff is what is gonna get you the size and cut you want then it is definitely worth it. I'm not sure about the answer to the question of whether its worth cutting a borderlin... |

did you clean it? I know it sounds dumb, but I just did the windex treatment to my girls diamond for the first time and I was blown away. I didn't realize it was dulled. |

I like pricescope. Diamond talk is such a bitter place. Its hard to go there and not lose your excitement for diamonds. There are too many elitists in there that care only about pointing out why other people are wrong and they are right. Way too politcal for my tastes. |

Maybe it was male PMS. Unlike female PMS, the male version has to do with dietary fiber. Ya know? an irregular man is a moody man. Wonder why old farts are always so grumpy? So what I'm saying is that perhaps barry had to much meat this week. excuses, excuses, excuses... |

I'm not sure. Let me take a guess. $1600-$2000??? I guess it depends if its a designer ring or not. It is a gorgeous setting. |

wow, a lot of great information RockDoc. When people say "plotted", isn't the plotting on the GIA or AGS report good enough? Why wouldn't the insurance companies take the original Cert as valid evidence of diamond value? Thanks |

another appraisal question.
Do you have to get an appraisal in order to insure it? Can''t you just use the certificate and the receipt of what you paid for it? I know I can trust who I''m gonna buy it from. Last time I had a diamond appraised, I had to sit there and take the abuse from the appraiser who was a cut freak perfect... |

You have a nice budget. I'm not sure if I'd go with a diamond that had a couple of Fair ratings, unless you don't care about cut. So I don't think spendng anything with a Fair rating is worth 17 and a half grand. You deserve the best for what your budget is. OR perhaps cut really doesn't matter on a... |

I see. I just kind of don't get it. From what I've read so far, it seems that an SI2 is either really an SI1(eye clean), or an I1(not eye clean). If so, then what's the point of an SI2 anyways? Is there really such type of an inclusion that falls between and SI1 and I1? What is considered a true SI2... |

If an SI2 in not eye clean face up, is the Cert then considered false?
If an SI2 in not eye clean face up, is the Cert then considered false? Is this reasonable grounds for a diamond return since it should have been graded SI3 or I1 to begin with? Warning, the following may contain many negative vibes. First let me say that I can completely relate to what you are saying. I was thinking... Perhaps the technology that will change diamonds will be cutting technology. If machine ever replaces man, then perhaps all diamonds will be cut to ideal specs. Then cut will no longer be an expensive factor. There will then only be 3 C's left; Clarity, Carat, and Color. |

follow up. I was checking out superbcert.com. The site says that a super ideal will hide inclusions in an sI2 stone. Is that true? Has anyone seen an sI2 superideal H&A that isn't eye clean?
