Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

I will definitely 'play' a lot more with the brooch, in the various configurations suggested by everyone here, after my vacation which starts this weekend. yay! :appl: Might post photos then, to see what you ladies think ;)) Meanwhile, I welcome more suggestions and creative ideas, as long as it doe...

Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

Thank you LibbyLA, Venti, and great to hear back from you Chrono! I will consider LibbyLA and Chrono's suggestion of perhaps adding a short chain to quasi modify (as Chrono puts it =) ) into a necklace. The pins will definitely get in the way I think. Will experiment and take a photo when I can must...

Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

I would absolutely NOT alter the piece. It's value, financial, ascetic, historical, and sentimental will suffer IMHO. In the future unaltered historical pieces become more rare. Everyone wants to "improve" on history, thereby destroying it. I'd feel a responsibility to protect it's origin...

Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

Wow! Thanks for the great suggestions on how to redesign my kerongsang. Thank you VRBeauty, Diamondseeker, JaneSmith & Chrono! :)) And Chrono, it's so cool to find a fellow PSer with the same background too! Yay! :appl: If you don't mind me asking. Where do you reside now? And from which part of...

Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

Thanks Kenny & Enerchi for responding! Kenny, wish I lived in the US where I can get this appraised by the Pricescope appraisers. As far as I know, there are no appraisers in my country that are 'independent'. All of them are attached to some jewelry house or jewelry trade outfit. I can still ge...

Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

Old Mine Cuts! Lovely! I wonder if the little swirls in which the stones are set can be un-attached from one another and reoriented into a pendant and dangle earrings? Hi Dreamer D, it's such an honor to have you comment on my post. =) The swirls are actually a one-piece cast (don't know if that's ...

Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

Beautiful! Definately old mine cuts. My family also got a set of three kebaya pins from my late grandmother (who lived in Indonesia). My parents turned one of them into a pendant for me - my mother also has one made into a pendant. They had originally offered to make them into earrings for me becau...

Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

In some of the pics, if I look closely, I can see really small prongs (almost look like tabs) on either side of the stone - some look like they have been worn away. You have a keen eye junebug. :appl: Yes, I see the tabs too. And because they're so delicate I'm wondering if by getting the stone loo...

Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

Thank you TXJewel, I happen to think they're gorgeous too (but I'm biased  ) and I really am blessed to have them. I have no intention of selling them but am curious to know how much they might be worth. The 'kerongsang' is used as part of our traditional costume/attire (called the 'kebaya...

Re: Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

Thank you ecf, junebug and kelpie. I had a feeling they were old mine cuts too but wanted the expert opinions of Pricescopers. If I could get the diameter measurements of each stone, would I be able to get an estimate of how much they're worth? Another question is....I wonder how these diamonds are ...

Late grandma's brooch...what cut is it?

I got these 3-piece linked brooches (called 'kerongsang' in the Malay language) from my late maternal grandmother but thought nothing about them until I read about old cuts on Pricescope. I'm wondering if the diamonds in these brooches are old cut diamonds, and if so what kind of old cut. My grandma...

Laila and Gypsy, thank you! It means a lot to have PS regulars give their positive votes on my ring. Gives me confidence that I've made a good call. May not be the best, but a good call nonetheless! :))

Re: Undecided

After all the pros and cons of a stone have been weighed out, the most important aspect is that you love it. Your ring is lovely and I hope you enjoy it every day! Re: Straight black line when looking under magnification

I have a .9 ct GIA graded diamond. The report has a clarity plot. So I don't buy that GIA only plots diamonds 1 ct or above. Girlygirl, I stand corrected. Your statement piqued my curiosity and I went to check out the GIA website. There are two types of report: (1) GIA grading report (offered for s...

Re: Straight black line when looking under magnification

thanks msmei. too bad about the lack of inclusion plot, looks like i'm a bit under the cut off (im sure its saving me quite a bit of money) . Does that requirement apply to it being laser drilled as well or is this something they would include regardless? can I assume if it is not mentioned in the ...

Re: Straight black line when looking under magnification

Thanks for the input :). I'm not concerned about the stone being different that the GIA number they claim. My coworker got his appraised and they ok'd it as matching the report. By saying the dealer is GIA certified I was just trying to convey that they should know what they're talking about and if...

Re: Undecided

Hi 2023, thanks for your moral support of my search for a 'perfect' diamond, without too much burden on my hubby's wallet  I went to view the 0.83ct, G, SI1 today. I liked the size and didn't mind the colour. In fact, I found that I kinda like it's 'warmer'(?) colour. It was clean to the e...

As mentioned in my previous post, I've begun my search over and have come across a 0.83, G, SI1 at a local jeweler. Hi all, finally had time to log in after work and saw your replies. The last thing I want is for my question to cause frustration to anyone.... Re: Undecided

Hi thb The vendors in this country do not offer refunds. In fact, once I buy the diamond and leave their premise, should I go back to upgrade to another diamond, the original price drops by 30-35% :(( Diamond A doesn't go noticeably darker, BUT, when I hold it about 6-10" away, I can see faint ...

Re: Undecided

Thank you for taking time out to answer my query. I appreciate all your feedback. Compromise on the other 'C's yes, but Cut, no.' So that's...

Hi All, I'm new to this forum and hope the experts here can help me. November this year would mark my 20th wedding anniversary, and my husband and I have been shopping around for a diamond solitaire.
