Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

Moving on to the green (mint) garnet and this one is no better. For some reason my hands shook so much almost all the pictures had to be deleted. Maybe it's because it is lunch time and I should have eaten something first. It is debatable whether this is a mint garnet or tsavorite. Sellers will cal...

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

I feel so inadequate as a photographer. Many have artistic flower pictures and most can at least capture the sharpness of the facets which I can do neither. I cannot even get the colour right! ;( The AVC pictures will be in 2 places but the green garnet stays squarely in CS and the EC stays squarel...

Re: So I purchased a blue spinel from jewelsapphire....

I tried to find the vendor photo a few times but it was removed right after I purchased it. It's a very no frills service with him BTW. He's not good at answering emails. It arrived in just one week which I think it pretty good, all the way from Colombo to San Francisco. I think the color was pretty...

Re: All hail Gene! Mahenge Spinel and other bits n’ bobs

Wow! I love your taste in stones. Can I ask when you bought that spinel from Gene? You say he got the rough in 2009 - is that when he cut it and sold it? That is an unbelievably stunning, saturated, red Mahenge! Its seldom I've seen round red spinels of that size - typically, there is some sacrific...

Re: All hail Gene! Mahenge Spinel and other bits n’ bobs

Wow, those are both really beautiful colors! And well cut of course :) I think setting on the garnet is considered a semi bezel of some sort.
Wondering what the rest of your collection is like!

Re: Where do you get your inexpensive settings?

Don't forget palladium as an option. But back to the topic. You'd be surprised how inexpensive it can be to have your jeweler pick out a stock setting from their catalog and set your stones for you. I recently had three yellow sapphires put into a gold stock setting supplied by my jeweler and it was...

I'll try. I'm pretty shy and I would feel kind of funny in class/ studio taking photos. But I'll build the courage :)

So I purchased a blue spinel from jewelsapphire....

I asked around here if anyone had any experience with them and against better judgement decided to try them out anyway. Had it been a more expensive stone I would not have made a purchase but for $120 I thought I'd just try and see how it went. It's a nice size about close to 8x10, I think. It is a ...

Re: Setting your own stones

These are my first two attempts with prongs. With a cabochon and a basket it was fairly easy. But trying to build a traditional basket with wire has made me realize why people so many use cad, and machines that create wax molds for you. Obviously the prongs will be shorter eventually.

Re: Setting your own stones

If they are calibrated, I would start with pre-cut findings like those from Tripps or similar from Rio. http://www.tripps.com/ That way you don't have to cut a seat, which is annoying and the part most likely to go wrong, and can just plop them in and close the prongs with some pliers. I've done it...

Re: Setting your own stones

I've been setting stones in a jewelry class for a while. I haven't really tried setting any into commercial settings yet ( well once but it turned out kind of funky ). Make sure you have the right tools and start with silver instead of gold.

Re: Cool shifting peach Umba sapphire that I probably won't

You are so right Lisa. Another issue was that it disappeared when against my skin. There wasn't enough contrast between my skin and the stone. So I sent it back today.
