Re: Another drinking thread....advice requested

Some of my patients have gone a significant length of time without drinking. It doesn't change the fact they are alcoholic. I believe it is more about lacking healthy coping skills. If the only way someone knows how to deal with stress, depression, anger, loneliness, trauma issues, unresolved grief,...

Re: Another drinking thread....advice requested

Here is review benefits and risks of alcohol. If you don't already drink, no reason to start. It also doesn't improve health for women to have more than 1 drink per day. But I don't think people should beat themselves up for low/moderate use in the scheme of things. Working in medical centers resid...

Re: Another drinking thread....advice requested

I'm pretty health conscious and weight conscious, so I use those reasons to keep myself in check. A recent study showed that one glass of red wine a day is equivalent to an hour at the gym, so that amount beneficial for one's health. Therefore, I don't go beyond a glass 'cos then it is just empty c...

Re: Another drinking thread....advice requested

I am not a huge drinker for a variety of reasons. Firstly, I am very sensitive to alcohol. I get buzzed easily. I get hang over easily. It is less tempting to do something knowing I will feel sick the next day. Secondly, there are few alcoholic drinks I actually like the taste of. Thirdly, I work in...

Re: What do you do with your hatred of a perp?

I am not a lawyer but as a therapist I have worked with perpetrators. Obviously it is a different type relationship than you are describing but I have to detach them (as a person) from their crimes. I have to find the good in them or at least the hurting. I remind myself it is not my job to judge th...

Re: Interviewing. Ask about flex work schedule?

Someone told me not to be afraid to ask for what I wanted during the interview. When her oldest started school she asked her boss if she could leave work at 2:00 (work from home a few hours in the evening) so she could meet her daughter's school bus. She was expecting a no but they agreed. Personall...

Re: Interviewing. Ask about flex work schedule?

ask for what you want in the interview. I think it is better to be upfront than expect changes 6 months in. I recently interviewed and asked for 4 days a week (so I could remain at my current job 1 day a week) and his reply was "done!"

Re: Therapy for anxiety / panic disorder?

ame, sorry you had a negative experience. Ethical therapists believe in short term therapy unless you have a chronic/severe issues. Doesn't feel good to feel taken advantaged of. In the future behavioral therapist do not care about the past. You might feel more comfortable with that style. Gestalt i...

Re: Therapy for anxiety / panic disorder?

Thank you all for your input and kind words. Y'all are wonderful! I greatly appreciate the personal stories, knowing of your successes gives me hope. The tips and info shared were helpful. A few reinforced what I thought I knew, but most were brand new to me and it's good to have multiple options. ...

Re: Therapy for anxiety / panic disorder?

Make sure you go to a provider in your insurance network. Most have searchable systems so you can look up behavioral health and see what pops up. Then most agencies have bio on each therapist. Might help you narrow down your choices a bit.

Re: Therapy for anxiety / panic disorder?

I am a LPC and work with all the disciplines you mentioned. I would suggest you find a counselor who specializes in CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy). I find those techniques work best with anxiety issues. Feel free to interview the therapist before you commit. You need to feel comfortable and it may...

Re: Anyone planning to buy a small SUV ?

I thought the blind spot was a deal breaker. That back window is SO little. The mazda has blind spot monitoring and its saved me a few times. Also there was this strange vibration. The finishes were blah (felt the same with the rav4). I got more bang for my buck with the madza and it is more fun to ...

Re: Confrontation

I got yelled out by a co-worker once and here is what I learned. Most people will NOT intervene. Maybe it is shock. Maybe it is survival but I can't blame them or expect other people to come to my aid. The offender does not always think they are at fault. In my case she was to blame and to this day ...

Re: Calling me "Hon." Is there a protocol?

I try not to let little things bother me so this is not a battle I personally pick. I lived in the South for 10 years and calling someone "hon" or "honey" (both to men and women) is very common. Not something I personally do but like another poster said, seems like people can't w...

Re: Are Anesthesiologists Failed Surgeons?

My dad had no interest becoming a surgeon. Sounds like an ignorant comment. He actually went to medical school to be a shrink and came out an anesthesiologist.

We have bamboo flooring. It is beautiful. Looks good even with two cats and a dog. I thought it was harder than regular wood but I could be wrong. We got it from Lumber Liquidators.

Re: Question to those in UK re: mental illness

Here in the states, there is the thought that they refuse treatment, but we should look at why. When I look at the homeless population, I see many people who should probably be put on some pretty heavy duty medications. Many people know that these meds have serious side effects and sort of brush of...

Re: What are you frugal with?

This seems pretty subjective. A splurge for me may be the frugal option for someone else (or other way around). I try to be mindful but am not always as careful as I should be. I do have a hidden savings account. It is at a different bank so I forget it exists. That's a good way to save money and no...
