Re: finding shirts

I think fabric makes a huge difference. I avoid any clingy type of fabric because it is unforgiving. I also avoid really long shirts since I am also shorter and I think it looks odd. I have luck at loft, banana, talbots, and jjill. When I find one that works I buy a few colors.

Re: Friends with Horrendous Problems - A Life Stage?

I had a professor in Grad school say, "you didn't break them, you can't fix them." Being in the helping profession, I have made this my motto at work and at home. I work with people of all different ages. Youngest was 17, oldest in their 70s and life does not just pick on the old. Every ag...

Re: Airbnb- any experiences, both good and bad?

My brother has an airbnb in SF. It is a win/win. Cheaper and more space for the travelers. Extra money for the home owner. It is peer rated so people leave him a rating and he leaves them a rating. Seems pretty legit. Not sure I would be comfortable renting a private room though. FYI they give them ...

Re: Poll: do you pump your own gas?

I haven't seen a full service station in years. So yes, I pump my own gas. I don't find it that taxing unless it is the dead of winter.

Re: Husband - functioning alcoholic - what to do?

I hope this doesn't offend people as several people have not found Al-Anon helpful. I have been actively involved for over 5 years. When I say active, I mean REALLY active. The first few years I went to 3-5 meetings a week. The past few, I attend 1-2 meetings a week. It isn't for everyone but for wh...

Re: Husband - functioning alcoholic - what to do?

Tacori E-ring- any info on detoxing / withdrawal and what he and I should know would be good ( web sites or specific info ?)- as I said he thinks he can do it himself ( is this dangerous?) I am not comfortable with it really (him trying to do it himself first) - but the step to go to rehab will mea...

Re: Are you happy?

Abraham Lincoln said, "most folks are only as happy as they make up their minds to be." Like most people, I have been through some difficult stuff in my life. I have gone through periods of depression and periods of happiness. I did not always take responsibility for my own happiness. I wo...

Re: Do You Value Friendship?

I really value *good* friendships. As I get older I really enjoy what I call "easy" friendships. The kind where neither feels obligated to call regularly but when you are together it is like no time has gone by. I am really lucky to have a handful of those types of friends. I used to be st...

Re: Husband - functioning alcoholic - what to do?

It is very important to act FAST when someone expresses desire for help. They will change their mind. He will need a place that can do medical detox. Worse case he can go to a medical hospital for detox and transfer to rehab. Let me know if you have any questions. This is what I do everyday.

Re: Ladies, how do you feel about aging?

This is actually a question that is asked on a grief assessment I give to patients ;)) so clearly it can be a common issue for folks. I have a mixed reaction. I look younger than I am (by ten years) so that helps. If I looked my age or older, I would probably be depressed. Sometimes I will long for ...

Re: Husband - functioning alcoholic - what to do?

The real problem isn't the drugs or alcohol....it is the inability to cope with life without mood altering substances. Just stopping is a bandaid to a larger problem. 12 step meetings are not for everyone but you cannot and should not underestimate the amount of people who have found support throug...

Re: Husband - functioning alcoholic - what to do?

Denial is powerful. Addiction is the only disease I know of where you can love someone to death (by enabling). However, I deal with families and they do not realize how powerful and dysfunctional their actions are. Ideally there is treatment for the WHOLE family. My suggestion is talk to his parents...

Re: Husband - functioning alcoholic - what to do?

I think everyone has a right to know their genetic make-up and addiction is a highly genetic disease. About one in ten people suffer with addiction. You are four times more likely if your parent has the disease as well (sober or not). I know I used to worry about my own daughter but I have surrender...

Re: Husband - functioning alcoholic - what to do?

First off I am very sorry. I know how difficult it is to care about someone lost in their addiction. I am a substance abuse therapist and most the folks I work with are in late stage addiction. There is so much most people do not understand about the disease. Most of all it is progressive. He will g...

Re: This guy's happy to give her half ... in their divorce

Stuff like this makes me sad. Guess we have a different sense of humor. To destroy property out of spite and revenge :nono: is really sick. I like to assume there was once love in their relationship. They say you only know someone once you go through a divorce. Guess I can guess the type of guy he i...

Re: Is it common now to have a baby shower with every child?

Well if we want to get right down to brass tacks about it-shouldn't matter if you have babies of different genders or not, b/c it's not anyone else's responsibility to provide for your child. If people want to get something for a 2nd or 3rd etc child, they can, nobody is stopping them. *Generally* ...

Re: Is it common now to have a baby shower with every child?

Seems to be. Personally I don't like it unless the kids are VERY far apart. I have been to several showers where the kids are same sex and only a few years apart. What possibly could they need? I have been to a few "sprinkles" too. Not a full blown shower. It's becoming a pet peeve of min...

Re: How Do You Stop/Control Worrying?

Therapy and making the decision to change. A deliberate choice. I don't remember a time in my life when I didn't have anxiety. Even as a small child. If my mom was late picking me up I thought she died in a car accident or abandoned me. That's not a normal thought for a young child. For me, most of ...

It's not something I would ever do but I try not to judge what other people think is beautiful. I can see why it would be distracting though. I also find face tattoos very distracting.

Re: Good Price for Jewelry Insurance?

Thanks, Kenny. As you know, people vary. So operating on the assumption that a person does want to insure, because they have their own reasons, I think that $16 per 1k of coverage seems fair.
