Re: Have you ever legally changed your first name?

My husband did. When he started school, his parents let him pick an American name. That was the name he used for everything, though his Vietnamese name remained his legal name. At some point after we got married, he had it changed so that his American name is now his legal first name. Originally, he...

Re: how old were you when you gave birth...

I was 23 when I had my eldest. I had my first two in grad school at 23 and 26; had my 3rd at 29. And now, my eldest is about to turn 15!

Same here, except that we'll have our 17th anniversary in July. In some ways, we grew up together.

Re: Do you use Twitter?

I have two accounts. One is a personal account that I use to follow friends, bloggers, etc. I'd say that a goodly percentage of my tweets on that account are directed to my sister - it's an easy way for us to connect quickly to exchange a few words. (We talk on the phone a couple of times a week and...

Re: Anyone else DREAD public speaking?

I used to be terrified of public speaking, whether the group was large or small. I spend a few years as a college professor, though, and lecturing daily in front of 150-250 kids pretty much killed my fear. I still wouldn't say that I love it, but I don't have the fear I used to have. I second the su...

Re: Ladies - Did you change your last name?

I added his last name on and use my maiden name as a middle name. Mostly that's for publications and work stuff. When introducing myself, I'd just say Clio Lastname. I had no real preference one way or another, and he had a mild preference for my taking his name, so I did. It was pretty easy, and I ...

Re: are you the favored child of the family?

Well, yes and no. I'm the independent, resourceful, ambitious one. The one my parents know they don't have to worry about. My sister is a little more spoiled - they will pay for things for her (travel, etc.) that they never would for me. So, in a way, each of us would say that the other is the favor...

Re: How many PS'ers graduated from a Seven Sisters college?

I did! I graduated from Mount Holyoke. Being there was one of the best experiences of my life. Then you probably know Emily Dickinson spent a year there. I'm a huge Emily Dickinson fan. She's one of my favorite poets as well. If you're ever in the area, her house in Amherst is a neat place to visit.

Re: what is the SQ footage of your current home?

Our house is 2600 square feet, 2 stories. We paid way more than I'd like, since we live in the DC area and bought 6 years ago, near the top of the bubble. God willing, we'll stay here at least 15 more years until the kids are gone, so I try not to worry too much about the way prices have gone down s...

Re: do you have life insurance?

Between what we have through work and separate term policies, we each have a little over $1M in coverage. We have 3 kids, so it's a necessity. The term coverage will expire a just about the time our youngest finishes college, at which point we will reassess - we might just go with the work-provided ...

Re: What about YOU drives your SO crazy?

I'm a bossy, know-it-all control freak. It's true - I am! I also hate making phone calls and dealing with people like the plumber, lawn guy, etc. My husband does all of that for me, and in return I edit his emails and work reports. In that situation, being a bossy, know-it-all control freak has a fe...

Re: Do you really like your job?

I work in grantmaking for a federal agency. I love my job. Certainly, there are some tasks I like more that others, and I don't especially like my director's management style, but I really love the work I do, and my colleagues are fantastic. I spend much of my time working with applicants to help ma...

Vintage watch repair?

I have an older watch (ca. 1950s) that has stopped running and needs repair, but I'm really at sea trying to find a place to do the repair, so I thought I'd turn to PS for suggestions. I live in the DC area and would prefer someone around here, but I'm willing to send the watch off if necessary. It'...

Re: If you lost your engagement ring would you.....

I would get something very different. Not because I don't still love my engagement ring - I do. I think, however, that trying to replace the ring would feel like a pale imitation of the original to me. I would want to go in a different direction so that it wouldn't feel as if we were trying - and po...

Re: What purchase do you most regret?

I regret buying the house we had in our former town. Not the house itself, which was the most wonderful house ever. I was grateful every day that I lived there. The problem was that we ended up moving after 15 months, and it took us 10 months to sell it. We took a big financial hit. Had we know that...

Re: Do you wear necklaces?

I wear pearls most days. Usually, it's just a plain, long strand worn doubled, but I do have a wonderful triple strand necklace of pink/lavender baroque pearls with a jeweled clasp that I wear when I feel like dressing up.

Re: East Coasters . . . Did you feel that?

Re: Have any of y'all seen "The Help"

I read the book and enjoyed it, but I doubt I'll see the movie - or at least not pay to see it in a theater. I have some reservations about the book that I think would be magnified in a film version.
