Your thoughts on this rough diamond price

I'm interested in purchasing a rough diamond for an e-ring. I'm not interested in having it cut. I've found one that I like but I'm uncertain about the vendor (ebay vendor) or the fair market value of the diamond. I've been reading many posts from this forum and would be very interested in hearing thoughts from members here on whether they think this is a good deal: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-11-CARAT-HIGH-VALUE-RARE-QUALITY-NATURAL-REAL-DIAMOND-OUT-DIAMOND-MINE-/360689299405?pt=Loose_Diamonds&hash=item53fac1efcd

Many thanks in advance.

May I ask why you want a rough, uncut stone as an engagement ring?

That is a beautiful diamond and will make a beautiful piece of jewelry.

I have no idea as to the value however, and would recommend that you contact some of the vendors here who deal more in the colors and also who have diamonds cut from rough. Diamonds by Lauren comes to mind as he does a LOT with color and cutting and will know more about pricing than those of us who deal more with finished goods.

There are both incredible bargains AND incredible scams on EBay. I will not even make a guess on this one since it is not my area of expertise.

Just my thoughts on a comfortable fall day in Boise.

Haha I agree with you Wink and I too find this diamond beautiful but of course I immediately started thinking what could come out of it if cut, the color especially. Honestly, I am a bit afraid when it comes to the bay though, not sure I would have confidence to spend so much money there although I do know that they have great protections in place for buyers these days. Hopefully someone will comment on the value of the rough.

OP - If I were looking for an uncut diamond crystal, I'd first look at John Betts' website - he is highly regarded and his pricing is very reasonable - he's based in NY which is a plus for US purchasers.

Here's his general website: http://www.johnbetts-fineminerals.com/index.htm

And here's a link to his gem-grade uncut diamond crystals: http://www.johnbetts-fineminerals.com/jhbnyc/diambest.htm

As to the eBay rough diamond you linked to, well, the outer rim is yellow in color with the center being more white/clear such that it appears to have a large window - perhaps the setting you've selected will minimize this. It seems to be a reputable eBay vendor but is based on Antwerp so unless he has a US address you could ship the diamond to, I think a return could be problematic given the high value of the item and the international shipping insurance limitations. The pricing does seem within range as compared with the John Betts rough diamonds.

eta: in case you're looking for setting inspirations, here's a link to Krikawa's rustic engagement rings (I especially like the Ancient Rome style... I have a rough Chivor emerald I plan to set this way): http://www.krikawa.com/unique-engagement-rings/creative-engagement-rings/rustic-engagement-rings

I will have to agree with marymm that something like this would be far preferable for a ring:

How about rose cut diamonds? That is rarely seen outside of Pricescope and would make a beautiful engagement ring. Singlestone.com is a jeweler who makes them. I would highly recommend this for the long term over a rough diamond.
