I'm excited to start a fun new project! I found a lovely sapphire on preloved (thanks SarahBear) and want to make a ring that will compliment my family heirloom ring (attached). More photos of the sapphire before repolishing can be viewed here http://jewelsbyericagrace.smugmug.c...-Ring/15987223_5wk8sB#!i=1199230086&k=q82SdT6

I'm thinking custom and will probably approach DiamondZone in Chicago and a Pricescope vendor (suggestions?). I'm hoping for suggestions from the group or even a sketch since I'm a terrible drawer.

I'm wondering whether I should try to match the ring I have or go with a standalone piece that's complimentary. I want white prongs and at least two sidestones.

Is flush fit common? I've found one inspiration photo showing flush fit (see next post). It's really important to me that the sapphire sit over the existing ring, which is less than 2mm high.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I think this is fantastic. What's your budget?

This is a custom setting by BGD:

I am pretty sure they could do something like it for your pretty sapphire. With the side stones they would probably charge you about 2,000- 2,200 from what their prices on their site.

I would send your band in to them, so they could make it to fit flush with it.

Gypsy - thanks for weighing in, so glad for your input with my project!

Love the simplicity of the BGD ring, I'm looking for a front-facing shot now. Great advice re: sending in the original to ensure a flush fit. Do you think the BGD setting would work with white prongs? I'm 100% sure I want white metal around the sapphire and sidestones with a yellow gold band.

For sidestones, I'm only newly considering pear as round has been my default and would match the little channel-set. Attached is another lovely flush-fit inspiration ring from ERD, though the undercarriage and pave may be a little too fussy for me - maybe it wouldn't be so in real life.

Yes, BGD would be able to work with your existing band. And do a platinum/white head if that's what you want. That particular setting is slg's I think.

This is the front shot:

They would be able to make it work for your stone too.

I like that ERD setting in general, but it's very floral, which to me doesn't match your band, which is very geometric.

For a little fun I made this mock-up. Now that I'm looking at pear sidestones I'm finding it really hard to like the side 'V' that holds the pear in place. Maybe round would be a better choice.

You don't have to have the V. Or you can have a much more delicate V like this:

Steven Kirsch could do that one for you. And you could ask BGD if they could too, if you wanted.

Just found this on the 3-stone thread, very pretty. I love single-side prong on the diamond which lends a pear-ish look. I think my 8mm x 6mm sapphire may be slightly larger. I worry that this sort of design is a little... generic? Pears would be more unique.

I'd like to provide inspiration gallery pics as well and will look for a few to post, or of course, welcome any suggestions. Gypsy, as always you're amazing, thank you!

Here's another photo of my super-sentimental ring that will be worn with the sapphire project. I'm only doing the project to wear with this little guy.

I think the likes of Steven K and other premium PS vendors may be too fluid, perfect and beautiful for it's more modest make. Something to think about.

8) You know I'm always happy to help. When I saw your band I felt that the BGD rings would be a good fit in terms of style. Since you will be doing the project custom, you can tell them to do whatever you want. I really like halfmoons with sapphires. Have you looked into halfmoons.

Great suggestion Gypsy - how do you do it? Half moons is so unique and would be special to me as my grandmother and I both love sciencefiction. I've hardly seen any half-moon settings, maybe I'd even like it with five stones as pictured.

This graphic should officially make me change my name to qu-weird-io.

this one has yellow gold and a semi-bezel edge - unusual and interesting, though I think I prefer all prongs.

I never answered this question. Budget is $1,800. I'd stretch for a pricescope vendor but prefer to spend less. That is if the stone works out - if not I may put this project on hold. I'm optimistic given SarahBear's photo's and the video of pre-cut stone from JBEG. Will know when I take delivery in 2-3 weeks and post my own photos.

A couple more of the band. The gold and sidestones are reforged from her original engagement ring, whose center stone fell out and was never replaced given the insurance hadn't been updated in 15 years. She wore a replacement oval sapphire ring for many years afterward, along with two other oval CS rings. I should consider her lesson for future purchases with a large center diamond.

Figure out how long you want the half moons to be. So 4mm tall? 5mm tall? Then call Yekutiel at IDJ and see what he has in house for you to buy. So get the sidestones first. Then either work with Yekutiel or ERD for the setting.

Just received the stone - it's even more beautiful than I could have imagined and also larger. I love the color and sparkle, very dynamic in different lighting. The cut is just perfect.

My 2 cents....choose the vendor to make the ring and then have them source the side stones. Very pretty sapphire!

I love Ovals with half moon,. This is my spess three stone ring, center is about 9x8 and all I could remember is that the half moons were at least 6mm tall.. can't remember the rest, I"d have to dig for it. but they total .40ctw and is two tone and step cut half moon side. I agree with DS to have whomever make your ring to source the sidestones.

ETA: found my email with the specs of my half moons measure 6.16x2.53 hope this helps.
