Hi,

I have been obsessing about trillions, as side stone to a princess cut. A few very helpful PSers have told me that they feel that trillions do not "bring the bling" that I am looking for....and have described them as not as sparkly, or even lifeless.

So, my question to those of you out there that have trillions is.....
do you like your trillions, are they sparkly, or do you now wish that you would have chosen a different side stone?????

Thanks,
Tina

When I upgraded my center stone I was looking at either trillions or half-moons for the sides. After looking at both of those I ended up keeping my original side pears because I thought they gave off a little more bling. Also, I saw a radiant with pears sides in one store and it looked georgous, so I think the pears would also compliment a princess.

I feel your pain. I too wanted a center princess with side trillions when I started (the ony reason I didn''t go this route is I ended up with a 3+ct stone that takes up my whole finger). What I learned is that stones like trillions, baguettes, etc. will not have quite the same "life" as your center stone (assuming it''s a really well cut princess), but it does not mean they will not be a beautiful addition.

Here''s a good example of how great this look can be:

Before I ended up with my solitaire, I was considering a three stone with a princess center. I really liked the look of princess with trillions, but after seeing one in person it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I found that I liked the look of baguette or trapezoid sides better. Traps are probably my favorite though, they seemed to have the most sparkle next to the princess.

If I was going to do trillions they would be sapphires.
The can look great in diamond but the bling factor is down compared to other shapes.
That isnt always a bad thing and if the ring is designed right they can be kicken.

Allot of trillions are really dead - and one reason is that such stones are cut very shallow (30%-ish is common). Not all though - you would find at least some over 50% deep cut for brilliance. I would have a hard time deciding whether well cut trillions or pears fare better in the sparkle department, but it is more likely to find decently cut pears than decently cut trillions.

Why this is so is quite easy - trillions come from a special kind of rough - thin triangular bit of diamonds: twinned crystals called ''macle''. Some are thicker with traces of pyramidal facets on at least one side, but most of these are so thin that it is hard to cut anything from them. The solution to the flat crystals are those trillions with pointy corners, few facets and huge tables - the faceted stone as the rough really are see-through.

Here''s the culprit: relatively thick and thin macles.

There are a couple of trillions on the reference charts of Ideal-scope.com: HERE The charts come with a word of caution that brilliant trillions are rare. But I would not give up on them for this much - especially if you have a custom project in mind and some leeway to seek a good cut. It may take a bit more time to find the right candidate, but then, the results would be a desirable exception to the ''flat trillion'' norm

Why I am saying this.. mostly because looking for good trills is not really a shot in the dark (calling in stone from a nameless pool until you hot the good ones). As there are cutting houses specializing in idea rounds, there are specialists in making fine accents and fancies, so ''finding'' the good ones is a matter of calling the right guys (and it is up to the maker of the ring to do this) and paying them.

My 2c.

THIS ring seems to make a pretty good example of a cute trillion. Sidestones are not often offered retail... so, short of making an order I wouldn''t know where to find pictures & all.
