If i have a budget of around $5-6k and like the Tiffany/Cartier settings (or maybe its just the brand and box). Would i be best to buy a ring with a small stone and get it remodelled (if that is even possible)? Or would i be better off waiting for a second hand ring?

Eg. one of these for the setting

By re-modelling do you mean plopping a larger diamond in a setting meant for a smaller diamond? A 1 carat diamond into a 0.24 carat diamond setting? Possible, you'd need a really good bench jeweller with the skills to do some setting surgery (changing the head). Probably not worth the trouble and expense.

I'd put the $5k to $6k budget towards buying one of the many preowned 0.60 to .80 carat Tiffany rings available on the internet. (If you're deadset on the brand, which is a bad idea, IMHO.)

I think you're asking " can I buy a small tiffany ring and have it altered to fit a larger stone I buy elsewhere? "

Not really a great idea. It will loose its name brand value and even then won't look very good if they can even do it. It won't look like a tiffany or a cartier anymore as the alterations won't be done by cartier or tiffany.

I'd just buy a replica from vatche or someone. It'll look like the setting and be made for your stone.then buy a tiffany or Cartier wedding day. Win win!
