On a strict budget? I want something that can't be duplicated, has character, but doesn't break the bank. Looking in the 5-7k range...tough I know.

I'd get a chubby antique marquise. And unique setting i would be setting it e/w

Or I'd go colored stone.

I might suggest a Fancy colored stone as something very unique and 'one of a kind'

Here are a few, just to get you started:

.77ct Fancy Yellow VVS1 Radiant Cut GIA Three Stone
http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php/jewelry/loose-yellow-diamond-77ct-fancy-yellow-vvs1-radiant-cut-gia-strong-color-r4526

1.02ct Radiant Cut Fancy Light Yellow, 18Karat White and Yellow Gold

.55ct Radiant Cut Fancy Yellow VS2 GIA Halo

Some styles are copied over and over again for a reason. They are classic and timeless.

I don't think you should go for unique just for the sake of unique. What does you lady want? What she wants is what matters. Even if it's a round solitaire. She's going to wear it.

The starting point should be what her taste is. From there we can help you add some personal touches where it is possible to make it a personalized and original piece.

But often in jewelry "Unique" isn't a compliment. It is really someone saying: "That's too ugly to copy. I'm glad there is only one of those out there."

that being said (about duplicated ) everything can be duplicated however every diamond is unique there aren't two exactly alike so my suggestion go through PS bling folders and take ideas from what you see and make it your own. I would also go for a radiant cut fancy yellow.......

Really like the first link!

Put it on hold NOW. I really like it too.

They have lay away I think as well. Problem with one of a kind is if it gets sold... it's gone.

I have an idea. But it'll need photos. So give me a bit to get to a computer.

Gypsy, what's your background? Are you a jeweler?

No, if I was in the trade I'd have a trade badge-- it's part of board policy. I'm just an educated consumer and jewelry fan (I wish I could say collector, but I just browse as my finances prohibit the actual BUYING part of collecting). Once you've been on these boards for several years you pick stuff up. :wavey:

Awesome..I appreciate the feedback. Just clueless and want it to be special for the lady...she's a saint to put up with me, so she deserves it.

If you want a flower like halo:

http://www.dvatche.com/index.php?page=collection&catID=2,17&id=92&alt=2
http://www.dvatche.com/index.php?page=collection&catID=2,17&id=88&alt=2

Both those are 2800.

http://www.beverleyk.com/engagement-rings/floral/r9793-a-d-d-cz.html this one is more affordable. I think it's under 1700.

Good old gold carries both Vatche and Beverly K.
you can go for this stone: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12019/ or something like this: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10619/ for the center.

Tell me about her.

Has she told you AT ALL what she likes in jewelry?

I absolutely love the idea of an antique ring or one of the new LAD settings with an OEC! That was my first thought when I read your wish to have something unique, but Gypsy has already posted it! As long as you think she'd like antique designs, that would be the way to go! (I love Erika's settings at Jewels by Grace, too, but not sure how prices compare. Those are unique designs, too!)

Here's a questionnaire I use for situations like this. Fill it in for me, please:

1. What is your budget?

2. How old are you guys?

3. What do she do for a living/working toward doing for a living.

4. How does she dress? Does she dress up a lot, or is she a jeans and T-shirts girl? Grundge? Tailored Ann Taylor tastes?

5. Does she prefer white metals or yellow/pinks ones

6. How is her house decorated? Does she love antique store trolling? Does she love everything Pottery Barn? Is she ultra modern with lots of metal and leather?

7. Is she clumsy? Is she very put together?

8. Does she love handbags and have a stable of them to choose from? Are they mostly practical (neutral colors: brown, black, beige) or are there a lot of colors in there? Blue, purple, red?

9. What metro area are you in or near? Or are you in the country? Tell me where you live and what it's like there (if it's not obvious, like NYC).

10. Do you guys have pets? Want them? What kind? How about kids? Have them? Want them?

11. Is she a brand name girl? Does she love things with brand names? If so why? Is it the dependability of brand name quality that appeals to her or is it the bragging rights? Or is she more understated and while she appreciates quality brand names don't do it for her?

12. Okay now, describe her to us in your own words? I've never met her, bring her to life me. What qualities does she have that you love? What is her sense of humor like? Just... tell us about her. Use many words. The more you tell us the better.

13. Has she expressed an interest in any particular style of ring (halo, Legacy, solitaire, three stone) or shape of stone (round, marquise, pear, princess, emerald, radiant.)?

14. What is her existing jewelry like? A lot of variety, or are there a few select pieces of similar design? What does she wear regularly?

It's all been sorta wishy washy, I know no pear or marquise, she doesn't like stones that are "raised up" (whatever that means). She used to wear mostly yellow gold, but now wears silver a lot, but it varies.

She likes frilly girly things....flowers, candles, weird soaps and lotions....she's a crier too. That's pretty much my goal for the proposal. If she doesn't, I'm doomed. She cries during undercover boss. So she has to cry when I pop the question.

Here's a questionnaire I use for situations like this. Fill it in for me, please:

1. What is your budget? I'm going to say $5000-$7000. Ideally toward the lower end of that spectrum.

2. How old are you guys? I'm 29, she's 32 (and has been married before).

3. What do she do for a living/working toward doing for a living. Works for a nonprofit in job placement.

4. How does she dress? Does she dress up a lot, or is she a jeans and T-shirts girl? Grundge? Tailored Ann Taylor tastes? She wears dresses, heels, all that. Very much takes pride in her appearance. She knows how to dress for the occasion, and spends a lot of time getting ready before a night out.

5. Does she prefer white metals or yellow/pinks ones....this is tough. 6 months ago, I would have said yellow. But now her favorite piece is a silver bracelet I bought her.

6. How is her house decorated? Does she love antique store trolling? Does she love everything Pottery Barn? Is she ultra modern with lots of metal and leather? She enjoys consignment store shopping, her house is full of nick nacks and doodads. Chandeliers and sconces and classic furniture. Definitely not modern when it comes to home furnishings.

7. Is she clumsy? Is she very put together? 100% poised at work/out in public. Doesn't like to show weakness.

8. Does she love handbags and have a stable of them to choose from? Are they mostly practical (neutral colors: brown, black, beige) or are there a lot of colors in there? Blue, purple, red? She has a ton f different ones. I heard Michael coors or something over the weekend.

9. What metro area are you in or near? Or are you in the country? Tell me where you live and what it's like there (if it's not obvious, like NYC). I'm in South Carolina. She lives in a very small town with a lot of good country people....but she's actually not from the states originally.

10. Do you guys have pets? Want them? What kind? How about kids? Have them? Want them? She has a cat named tinkerbell. Yes, really. Kids, probably not in our future,

11. Is she a brand name girl? Does she love things with brand names? If so why? Is it the dependability of brand name quality that appeals to her or is it the bragging rights? Or is she more understated and while she appreciates quality brand names don't do it for her? She likes Nice things and if they happen to be brand names, fine. But it's not the most important to her.

12. Okay now, describe her to us in your own words? I've never met her, bring her to life me. What qualities does she have that you love? What is her sense of humor like? Just... tell us about her. Use many words. The more you tell us the better. She's fiery, super smArt, passionate about everything she's interested in. She challenges me, and I love that. She doesn't let me bs her. She takes great pride in being able to take care of herself. She wants to be successful. She's not overtly lovey dovey all the time, but she surprises me with I love yous that catch me off guard in just the right way. She loves art, cinema, music, maying that appeals to the senses. She enjoys good food. She can have a foul mouth when she really gets riled up, but it's cute. She's physically beautiful, but she downplays it. She makes tacos so delicious they'll make you wannna slap your mama.

13. Has she expressed an interest in any particular style of ring (halo, Legacy, solitaire, three stone) or shape of stone (round, marquise, pear, princess, emerald, radiant.)? Round, princess, 3 stone, but not adamantly about anything. It's more of that ring that's in front of us, I like it. Or that ring thats on TV, thats nice.

14. What is her existing jewelry like? A lot of variety, or are there a few select pieces of similar design? What does she wear regularly? She wears a tiffany silver heart bracelet, a yellow gold right hand ring that has several small diamonds, and a gold heart pendant. She also buys a fair amount of cheap costume jewelry.
