As my tenth anniversity comes near, I have an opportunity to buy a new diamond for my wife. I need all your imput as to how much I should pay for the diamond, info below:

Following is the information on it:

Marquise
EGL Certified with certificate
Weight: .96 carat
Color: E-F
Clarity: SI2
Girdle inscribed with EGL report #.
Estimated retail replacement value $9,270.00

What would be a fair price? What would be a steal??

Honestly, I really do need and APPRECIATE your help. My wife will thank you too!!

What would be a steal, for the jeweler, would be the $9,270. Personally I think it highly unethical for EGL to issue pricing with their paper. Especailly pricing so far from reality that even the Mall stores will use this price to sell against rather than an actual selling price.

I will let others take the time to find you the best price for this stone, but I will take the time to tell you that that price has no reflection upon reality, and that is assuming that this paper is actually accurate as to the color and clarity grades, which it may or may not be depending on which EGL lab it came from and when...

Is the original post saying that EGL are giving a price, though?  It sounds more like one of those over-inflated appraisals to me, probably issued by the vendor rather than EGL.  The question being asked is just "what would be a fair price for this diamond?" as a point from which to start a discussion with the vendor.  Isn''t it?

I'm not sure if that was the EGL appraisal or a price, but if that's your actual BUDGET, you could get her a honkin' ROCK. Here's what I came up with just by PS-ing those very loose specs above. A search here on PS for marquise diamonds .94 to 1.05 E to F color and SI2 clarity produced a price range from $2500 to $3600. Most of those diamonds were GIA graded stones. EGL stones usually are a bit less expensive.

I''ve seen EGL''s with estimated values. I don''t think they should be assigning retail values on certs as well.

Just from a negotiating standpoint, is the vendor asking you to make the first offer (price) on the stone? You would be on much better footing if you first found out what is his starting price and (after being educated what are fair prices) you going from there. You should not be starting from that inflated price and working down.
