To go down to a ''J'' colored stone if being set in yellow gold? I keep getting conflicting information. On one hand I am told it is ok to do so because the stone will compliment the yellow gold, and on the other hand I am told that if I go with a princess cut then the ''J'' color will not look as appealing than if I went with a RB. HELP!

If the stone is well cut, and to me that''s the most important C, it would be fine as long as it is set in a white gold head, or platinum head. I wouldn''t put a J in yellow gold prongs because the yellow gold would reflect into the stone. There is a thread all about J''s which you should look up. I think it would be very helpful. HTH

J will be fine in yellow gold for most people.
If someone sees a yellow tint they will just think its a reflection of the prong and most likely it will be.

Thanks for the response! I never really thought about the prong reflecting off of the stone...Do most yellow gold rings come with white gold/platinum prongs? Or is this something I will have to request specifically? I will definitely have to pay more attention to this from now on.

It is quite common to buy a yellow gold ring with a platinum head, to keep the stone really secure. Plus the added benefit is making the stone appear whiter. But make sure you look for it and mention that you want it.

As for a J in yellow gold, your best bet is to go have a look at a J in person, and preferably next to yellow gold, and see whether it is acceptable for you. I''m not particularly sensitive to colour so an I-J would probably be fine for me, but some notice colour in a G! Most of the J owners on this forum say the J doesn''t look yellow, it just has "warmth". Your best bet is to check out a couple (in both RBs and princess cuts, if you are deciding between them) and decide whether they are a good choice for you. You are the one who will look at it all the time

Thank you Indecisive! I am constructing my list of things I want to go and view so that next time I go out and start looking my questions won''t get all jumbled! You all are very helpful, thank you!

My other concern is when I view stones in B&M''s the stones ALWAYS look beautiful... but it isn''t possible to take the stone out to different lighting conditions unless you purchased it and did it yourself.... Also, has anyone who dealt with Blue Nile or Mondera asked for a brilliancescope?

I''ve never done it before, but they do have some VERY burly security guards at a lot of jewellery stores who would keep their product safe, so maybe if you explain that you want to see the stone AWAY from their bright lights and see what it looks like in daylight/low light/etc they may walk you around to different areas of the store to view the stones or maybe even let you go outside (accompanied by your Burly Friend

) to see the stone under different light conditions.

Also something to keep in mind when viewing the stones - if they show you stones on a black pad, it will look whiter than when viewed on a white pad (you''ll notice Tiffs shows you their stones on a black pad ... whereas they should use a white pad so you can make an accurate comparison.)

Try comparison a G, H, I and J (or whichever of these you can) to see where your eyes draw the "limit". And if possible, try viewing them as against yellow gold. Oh, and see them in the actual shape you want! For example, for me an I in an emerald cut is too "warm", but even a J in a round is fine!

There''s some disagreement about whether yellow gold requires you to go higher or lower on colour, but I argue that when a white diamond is compared with a yellow band, it will look whiter than the same stone against white gold or platinum - so I think unless you''re very colour sensitive you should be okay with a J! Especially an ideal J. And perhaps some faint to medium flourescence might make the stone face up a bit whiter too!

Lots of good advice Indecisive! I was thinking about it and I have never asked to view a stone in outside of the store (I guess I always assumed that they would look at me as if I were from planet Mars). I will definitely try this approach. you provided quite a few things that I will think about, thank you! I will let you all know how it goes!

Explain that you would like to see the stone in various lighting conditions. Take it to "quite light" places in the store. You can request to see it outside. I have always been granted the request. Sometimes I am escorted & I''ve left my purse as collateral. Make sure you request to do this at a time when the store isn''t frenzied with people.

This is the second one I like. Remember all of these I would get in 18kt yellow gold w/a platinum prong (thanks to the advice from you all)

And this one....now you see I am ALL over the map! Although I really love the first one I posted, however I think the stone might be set so set that it would be easy to knock off (not that I do anything strenuous with my rings on and I work in an office). ALSO, does anyone of you know the best prongs to protect a princess cut stone?

have you gone an tried any of these on in person? I know for me, I have seen many rings that I loved but just did not look right on my hand. that might help you at least narrow down the shape you like the best.

I have tried on variations of the second two, not the first one. Although the first one is similar to the third one except it consists of princess cuts instead of rounds. I have tried on every shape stone imagineable (minus heart shaped) and I loved the princess cut, round, cushion and radiant the best.
