How to take pictures

I have been trying to take pictures of my studs and not able to take.
sometimes its not clear, sometimes i am not able to focus and other times i see my diamonds black.
please help me how to take a good picture.
i see some of the greatest pictures posted here.

Hello,

What kind of camera are you using? If you are using a consumer "point and shoot" style camera, does it have a "Macro" mode (usually designated with a flower emblem)? Also, are you using a tripod, and in good lighting conditions?

Let me know, and I can help you some more after I have some more info.

I am using sony DSC H1, it does have macro mode, i tried in macro mode too, i don''t have tripod.
I tried taking in home with good lighting and also tried in sun light too.
with sunlight its too bright just like too much of flash.
