A local diamond specialist printed out a list of F and G color VS1 and VS2 stones for me to look at. There were only a few ideal cuts available and he brought in the stone below for me to look at:

Wt.: 0.91
Lab: AGS
Shape: Round
Color: F
Clarity: VS2
Depth %: 62.5
Table %: 56
Dimensions: 6.20x6.17x3.86
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Remarks: AGS0
Price: $5915
Certificate Date: January 2004

The jeweler has been very good about educating me about diamonds. He showed me the diamond throgh the microscope, the scope that shows the hearts and arrows, and the other machine that shows light escape. There''s some inclusions in the center, but not visible with the naked eye and difficult to see even under 10X magnification. There''s no question that the diamond looked very nice, but it''s about $1,000 more than I was planning to spend. My concerns other than the price was that there wasn''t a lot of other diamonds I could compare it to since he only brings in diamonds that people want to look at. Also, some concerns about the jeweler came in when it seemed that he wasn''t overly excited about bringing in other diamonds for me to look at, saying that ideal cuts would be hard to find (the ones on the list were probably already gone, although the certificate was dated 1/04), the prices are only going to increase as you get closer to Xmas, the difference in going 1 or 2 color grades down is not significant, only about $300 to $600, and he will need to return the diamond very soon (after a week, they start asking for the diamond back). He did mention that I could take a chance and wait. This jeweler has been the best from all the local ones I''ve been to and the other places I''ve looked have all been significantly higher priced for comparable diamonds.

What do you guys think about this diamond and the price? Help please!

Have you used the HCA ( go to "tools" at the top right of this page and choose "Cut Advisor")? Do you have the crown/pavillion specs? it''s hard to tell/ Have you comparision shopped here? I suggest doing these things to get better footing. As for abeing rushed into purchasing the dimaond, that''s no good regardless.

Also, F, VS2 is a really nice combination but you might save with the G/SI1. Just a thought. SIs can be totally clean but that''s a personal matter of tolerance/taste.

Have you seen this one? WF .91 F, VS2 Ideal

And with the Pscope discount, you're saving almost $800, bringing you much closer to your budget. If you're interested, I'd call WF and put it on hold.

Edited: Wait a minute--is this the same stone? Maybe it is a list stone, but it doesn't seem that way...? It is shockingly similar to the one you posted, down to the cert date....Hmmmmm....if it is, you're getting ripped off at $5,915. I'd check it out! If it's not the same stone, you may have hit the jackpot--it is identical to the one you have but a lot less $$$.

Wow, this looks strangely like the same diamond! From what I remember from the certificate, the inclusions look almost exactly the same as the certificate for the diamond I was looking at. Coincidently, there''s also a very similar diamond selling at Abasias for $5300 which I found though Diamond Helpers price search. I''ve requested a copy of the certificate and will compare.

I''ve never considered buying on the internet before. Are there any concerns? How is Whiteflash and how do I go about getting it set? The jeweler was going to set it in a standard yellow gold solitaire setting and I was going to have my fiance pick out a setting she likes later.

Thanks very much for your help!!

I''m quite sure it''s the same diamond.

How is Whiteflash? Extremely reputable, and great to do business with. As for getting it set, WF does have the type of setting you describe. You''ll see you can get a yellow setting for short money, and then your fiance can still pick another setting later. WF will set the diamond for you if you wish.

WF enjoys a solid reputation here. Personally, if it were me, I''d buy it from them and save $800+ dollars--you said you were about $1,000 over budget...there you go.

Or, you can try to get your local guy to meet the price...but be careful--once he knows you''re interested he may hold the stone so WF can''t call it in. I am no expert in these matters but I had this happen in reverse once--my local guy tried to call in a stone I had tipped off one of the internet vendors I might be interested in it. He put a hold on it and It became impossible to get it (this was NOT WF). This was partially my fault--I shouldn''t have expressed any interest with the internet person but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Tread carefully. Be savvy. While some vendors are more consumer-oriented than others, all of these people are running businesses and are out to make money.

There is also a discount from Whiteflash if you mention Pricescope. I bought my ring from Whiteflash and was very pleased, They are easy to do business with and will ship the stone to an appraiser for you to have appraised. You do not have to pay them until the stone is ready to be shipped to you.
The stone may be in the posession of the dealer and may have to be recalled if it is indeed the same one. But if you do not buy it, you know that it is not sold and you have the advantage of already having seen it.

I believe it is the same diamond. I had a similar experience at a local B & M. I didn''t buy the diamond but the extra $1000.00 it would have costed me would have been worth it for the lifetime cleaning & inspection services they offered. It''s your decision, but you need to factor in these things into your decision, not just the cheapest price.

Thank you all for your help!! Well, I didn't buy the diamond . . yet. I'm stll torn on what to do. I like the comfort of having somplace locally to go, but $800 is still a lot to pay for that comfort. I wanted to take a look at the diamond again and see what the local jeweler said when I tell him my friends at pricescope found the exact same diamond on the internet for significantly less.

When I ran the cut adviser with a 35.2 crown angle and a 40.9 pavillion angle, the Light Return, Fire, Scintillation, Spread
or diameter for weight were all Very Good and the Total Visual Performance was 2.5 - Very Good.

What do you guys think of this diamond and price?
