Your best bet is to sell on the secondary market. You could expect to recieve 30-50% less than what you paid for it. If you sell to a BM or pawn shop I suspect that you will get a low ball offer. If you have the time to wait for a sale, I'd list it yourself or consign.

Thank you, Christina. As I have never sold jewelry before, by secondary market do you mean online (I did list it here just a little bit ago on the selling forum)?

Unfortunatley, without a lab report from a reliable lab, the resale value will be no where what you would hope
 On top of that, the mount is also not worth very much for resale. A pawn shop might offer you $250 or something crazy like that for the mount, who knows about the stone but not much.If I were in your shoes I would perhaps try to sell the diamond loose privately. YOu can start by looking at retail stores that sell uncertified stones to get a sense of retail value, then assume you can get about half that privately. A good appraiser can also help you determine fair market value for resale. It will not be anywhere near what you hope. You might be able to get $2000 or so for a stone with no lab report, perhaps more, I am not familiar with princess prices, but that is my first guess. |

Secondary market like DB or eBay is your best bet. You won't get much from a pawn shop. I've sold gold in the past and found one place that gave me a great deal on all the gold but the guy wasn't even interested in diamonds under 1 ct. I see yours is more than that, which means it's just about where a pawn/jeweler may be interested, but from what I heard from another pawn seller is they're flooded with diamonds. A lot of people have sold off jewelry due to financial problems so they simply have overstock and aren't going to pay as much as your ring is worth on the secondary market. Dreamers suggestion of about $2K sounds good.

I had a wedding set from my ex that I needed to sell...it had a .90 ct center round with .25 round on each side. I originally brought it to a jeweler and he offered me $1200 for the engagement ring, wedding band, and 3 pairs of diamond earrings. I ended up selling everything individually on Craigslist. I got $3,000 for the engagement ring, $400 for the wedding band, and $300 for the earring sets. None of my diamonds were certified. BUT, everything was purchased at Shane Co, so the buyer was also getting the upgrade policy transferred to them. I wasn't scared to sell on Craigslist because I made appointments to meet at the jewelry store. BTW, I had everything sold within a week.
My advice would be to get an appraisal (if you don't have one already) and post it on Craigslist as a complete set. If that doesn't work, try to sell the center stone separately. Also, go to court and get more support so that you don't have to worry about feeding your little ones. That's just my 2 cents! |
