i have a question in regards to girdles...i have been reading a few posts in regards to bruted girdles. when does a bruted girdle become a problem? it seems that only if your stone has a thick to very thick girdle, or fish eye do you start noticing the problem. if you do not have either of those mentioned above, is it something that will you will notice in a well cut stone? some say you can see it from the table of the diamond if you tilt it, again, is that more so if the girdle is thick? there is also the question of a bruted girdle getting more dirty. if you clean your diamond regularly, will this still be a problem? thanks all.

Usually the problem with bruted girdles is the bearding or very small, and many, tiny feathers extending into the diamond from the girdle.
When a diamond is rounded up using this method, the diamond being bruted is put into a lathe type machine and turned. Another diamond attached to a long stick is lightly held against the turning diamond causing the turning diamond to wear away. If the person doing this process applies too much pressure, it will cause bearding in the finished product. Yes, a bruted girdle is harder to keep clean but if the diamond is cleaned often, it should not be a problem. The thickness of a bruted girdle should be the same as that of a polished girdle; thin, medium to slightly thick. Looking at it from the side it would appear as a thin white line. On shallow diamonds with large tables, you can see the girdle from the top. This is a fish-eye. If the diamond is bruted the white bruted girdle is more easily seen. If the diamond is cut properly to ideal proportions with a thin to slightly thick girdle, you should not see that girdle through the table. |

Correct, however we prefer diamonds with a polished or faceted girdle... It's just been finished out a little better than a diamond which just has a bruted girdle. |

The girdle on a diamond can be unpolished,which is called BRUTED GIRDLE.A bruted girdle should look frosted or waxy.If the girdle-shaping process is done incorrectly,the girdle will have a rough,granular surface.A rough girdle can trap oil and dirt,and it can eventually get so dirty that the stone look dark.Try to avoid it unless you have ample of time to clean it now and then.
