It''s gorgeous ... but you did say she was nowhere near close to getting engaged, right? This might be fun for you but do you REALLY want to start the madness with her when she might not get a resolution to the deal anytime soon? Just something to think about!

Haha, fiiiine, be reasonable about it!! ![]() But now that I''m engaged and completely happy with my ring, I need a new project! And I just find it frustrating that I can''t find ANY pictures of what I''m picturing, it seems so simple!! Is there any reason why an east west oval would be harder to do prong-set than a north south? It just doesn''t make any sense to me why there aren''t any!But I may follow your advice and just start a folder of "rings she might like" and not show them to her until she and her boyfriend get more serious. We''ll see! But we have already discussed which types of rings she likes a bit, and she tried mine on and it looked AWFUL on her shorter fingers, so I was thinking of interesting non-rounds which would not be set north-south as I think the north-south-ness of my ring is what made her fingers look stubby. Even though that''s opposite of conventional wisdom....hmmmm....maybe I should just do some work instead though.

Two things... 1. Go do some work instead??? What? Once you are bitten by the PS bug, it really cuts into that whole work thing 2. I think you are right about the conventional wisdom possibly not working in all cases. I have short fingers and I think I will be getting an E/W set Emerald Cut because the traditional North South Solitaire settings made my fingers look fat .So...have fun with your project and maybe just wait until she is closer to actually getting engaged to show her your finds...that way she won''t become a LIW any sooner than necessary! |

I couldn''t agree more! I need a new hobby... After the E-ring, I moved onto the anniversary ring... now I''m checking out possible e-rings for my guy-friends'' girlfriends! No one is anywhere near getting engaged, but I''d rather have them start saving now! I LOVE the East-West Oval. I''ve mostly seen it done with colored stones. Here''s one I found... not plain shank, but it''s prong set: Oval set E/W The E-W thing looks really good on my small hands and short-ish fingers. ("little kid" hands) I do find that certain North-South stones make my fingers look stubby - N-S Emerald cut solitaires look horrendous on my fingers (darn, I''ll have to get one with nice big traps on either side!! ).When a stone is set N-S, even though it covers the same amount of surface area, it doesn''t leave much room before you get to my knuckle, and I think that is what makes my finger look stubby... |

There are some nice e-w bezel ovals on this thread: http://www.pricescope.com/forum/show-me-the-ring/show-me-your-oval-ring-t17497.html
Check out the ones posted by Hannah, I just love them! |

I don''t believe in all my years on these forums, I''ve seen an east/west oval in a plain setting. I bet it would have to be custom made but could easily be done with any of the lucida style settings. I think it would be gorgeous. I LOVE ovals and it was my 2nd choice but DH was pickin the stone and I know he wouldn''t let me help so I probably would have gotten a huge bowtie LOL. I''m now insane about ideal rounds!! I will have an oval someday, I''m trying to get my MIL to switch her marquise for an oval..........then the possibilities for a 1ct marquise. I don''t know, she already has a marquise pendant. OT, we had fun going thru her jewelry chest while she was telling me where she wanted her jewelry to go if something happened since she hasn''t had time to do her will yet. Not fun conversation, but fun to look at all the GORGEOUS jewelry she has. She said I could borrow anytime!! She travels a lot so I guess that was needed. She''s giving her diamond studs to my daughter which I was happy (they''re 1cttw) because my daughter is her step-grandchild but most of the bigger diamonds go on to me and then to my son which is her bio grandchild. My daughter won''t be left out though!!
Yes I have to talk to my MIL about that oval!! I remember Superbcert had a smokin D oval special, gotta go peek at it!! |

By the way, my son is 7 months old and my dh told me yesterday, when he gets engaged, I can give him my ring and then I can upgrade LOL. I''ll be wearing this for many years.........so glad it''s a gorgeous stone, just small at 1.02ct for my fat fingers. It''s also plain setting, lucida with plain comfort fit platinum band, no big bling and I''ve had no one comment on how beautiful it was BOOHOO :) I have years of PS''ing to figure out what I''ll do when he grows up. My FIL also has a 1ct ring that my MIL bought him (round) and he''ll never wear. That will probably go to my son also, he''s the King.........first boy born into Italian family and has his grandpa''s name as tradtition.....Robert. My husband got Albert after his grandpa but doesn''t look like an Albert (we call him AJ). Wonder if my son will follow tradition and name his son Albert. I won''t be unhappy if he doesn''t but DH will.
I''ll hit the 2ct mark but diamonds will be so expensive by then and it just might be an oval (east/west of course) because they look bigger than rounds. I''ll just have to find a good cut one and then I''m gonna get some bling on the band, maybe some halo to make it look bigger, but they''ll be out of style then probably. I will never be able to switch out the platinum band because he put it on my finger on our wedding day. That will stay forever. I was going to get it engraved but I had sizing balls put in so not much room now. I saved my diamond for my dd from the first marriage, it''s only fair that my new ring goes to my son. The first diamond was a .40 pear F SI1 maybe she''ll find someone with money and the pear can be an extra side stone LOL. A mom''s wishes!! I''m a spoiled diamond brat. So this is not off topic just jibberish about how I''m addicted to all the sparklies and will be here searching for that upgrade for like 25 years. Please keep it open Leonid!! I look here almost every day at all the gorgeous stuff. By the way, I''m about to have a synthetic ruby put into an east/west setting. The stone is 5 carats though and my finger is size 7. Not sure how it will look but my fingers are short and stubby and if I set it north/south, it goes to my knuckle. Will be posting pictures of course!! Something like this but with a 12 X 8 1/2 emerald/antique cusion rectangular cut blood red synthetic ruby. ![]() |
