I am in the process of purchasing a diamond for my engagement ring. I found a diamond at a reputable local dealer. I was ready to make the purchase and came across the Holloway Cut Advisory test. Needless to say the diamond scored poorly. I had two other parties few the diamond and we all thought it looked clean to the eye and not bad under 10x. Here are the specs from the GIA report. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you

Measurements 7.40 by 7.44 by 4.47 mm
Shape Round Brilliant
Carat Weight 1.5
Color G
Clarity SI2
Cut Excellent
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Excellent
Florence None
Table 61%
Crown Height 12.5%
Crown Angle 32.5%
Pavilion Angle 41.6%
Cutlet None
Girdle slightly thick
Pavilion Depth 44%
Crown to Cutlet 60.2%(I am not sure if I am reading the GIA report correctly for this number)

Should I worry about the results of the HCA or not?

Can you please give me the reason you think I should find another stone?

Brightness, fire, and scintillation all suffer at these proportions.

Table is huge angle is too small just not good proporations for sparkle and light reflection

The other diamond I looked at had these dimensions.
GIA Certified
Round 1.59
Color H
Clarity SI2
Triple Excellent
Cutlet None
Flourescence medium
Table 56%
Crown Height 16.5%
Crown Angle 36.5%
Pavilion Angle 40.6%
Pavilion Depth 43%
Crown to Cutlet 62.7%
This diamond scored 2.4 on the HCA report. The cost is $1000.00 cheaper. Would you recommend this stone over the other?
Should I look for a completely different stone?
What proportions should I look for to get a good diamond.

Thank you for all your help.

Big table + a flat top = :knockout:

Was the SI2 eye-clean? did it seem hazy or not as crisp compared to other stones?

I do understand the proportions can vary based on who you talk to, but is there a range that will result in a brilliant diamond? Table, depth, angles, etc. When I viewed the stones they looked nice in the store. I am very particular, can see slight differences in the color, and have often noticed flaws without the micropscope that others could not. I just dont understand the proportions. I am sacrificing the clarity to obtain G color. My max budget is 12k for 1.5 carat. Is this unrealistic.

Use these parameters to help you get an HCA score under 2.0:

table: 54-58

depth: 60-62.3

crown angle: 34-35.0

pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0

One thing you are not looking at is the diameter. That stone that was 62.7% in depth probably is smaller in diameter than it should be. So always look at and give the diameter measurements on any stone you are considering.

I will have to look and see what you can get for $12K and 1.5 cts.

Yes, you can get a GIA triple-excellent 1.5 G SI1 diamond in the $11-13k range.

Use this search and be sure to check GIA 3X. The only problem is that most of those vendors who show up do not show photos of the stones and idealscope images. But it can give you an idea of the prices. An AGS superideal cut G SI1 is going to be over $15k.

Thank you for all your help. I will use the proportions to weed through the diamonds.

One more questoins, should I stay away from stones with flourescence? Is faint ok in a G stone? Based on what 'veI read some people like the medium blue if your buying H color or below, but some stones appear hazzy.
