Nope. I wouldn't do it. KT just got .3 each studs that came with AGS certificates, and I've seen .25's with AGS certificates. Someone on here just had A CERTIFIED (EGL Antwerp) stone that was certed E IF come back J IF. No way would I go uncerted, expecially since frankly she sounds igorant. Since just about anyone with some kinda random background can con someone into paying them for an appraisal (it seems) you have NO idea who is providing this document, and neither does your insurance company.
RUN don't walk away. The ONLY ONLY ONLY way I would by an uncertified stone was if it was from a vendor I absolutely trusted, with a return policy AND then followed by an independant appraisal from the appraiser of my choice. And I'd be likely to ONLY do that for a used or vintage stone IF I were getting a phenomenal deal. |

I''d probably buy an uncertified small stone from someone like Jonathan at Good Old Gold who can show me the colorimeter results, the magnified image, the light performance, helium scan, etc. Otherwise, forget it. An appraisal from a vendor without an independent lab certificate (or all that info I just mentioned) is worthless.

Well grrrrrr! Thank you everyone for the help and info. I am going back and forth with the sales lady. She of course says that a certificate doesn''t mean much any more. But doing some comparisons on WF and GOG it seems I could get the same diamond for less. She also said the appraisal is done in house using the Rappaport sheet??? It would be $100+ to get the certification done.
Our diamond is .41 G SI2 and $800. Does this seem a little steep to anyone else? And no of course I have no other specs. Only that it looked gorgeous in person. And I am now regretting being so flustered and taken aback in the store that I forgot such important questions. I guess I also expected all diamonds to have a certificate! |

Just to put another option out there. I''d check this one out if I were you. AGS ideal, higher color and clarity, and it''s about the same price.

Well thank you for all the help and prompt replies! We are having things properly taken care of now! As usual, my darling BF got frustrated in the beginning and then came around. He understands why I am so insistent. Once the sales rep realized how serious and knowledgeable I am she stopped trying to jerk me around. The best part is, everything is going to be taken care of and BF will still get the ring on time!
This is why I love PS and will be forever grateful to you all! |
