Hi, I've noticed many marquise cuts have a big variation in girdle thickness from slightly thick to very thick etc. Not many have medium sizes girdles, any reason for this ?
And any affect on light return with these variations ?

They have thicker girdles to retain weight so the diamonds sell for more. You will find marquises within thin-medium kind of girdles are really rare.

That said, light performance is not hugely decided by girdle thickess. Just because you find a diamond with thin-medium girdle thickness doesn't necessary mean that it will perform better than one with a very thick girdle.

The variation mostly affects the carat weight (face up size) and durability. Slightly to Very thick girdle isn't all that uncommon or terrible for a fancy shaped diamond.

Additionally, diamond cutters will often intentionally try to make the girdle thicker at the points/tips of a marquise to help prevent chipping. You can check with the gemologist/jeweler you're working with to see if the girdle is thicker near the points. As the others have said, it's very normal to have girdle variation, esp with some fancy cuts.
