I am a newb here and need the groups help. I have previously listed a question to the forum asking for help so I could understand some images I was sent. It turned out the images proved the stone I was looking at was a bust, but within OoohShiny suggested that I ask the group to help me find the right stone. Lunajewels made a great suggestion, but unfortunately in Platinum it would put me way over budget.

Would you please help me find a great ring for my hopefully soon to be fiance? She is a recent leukemia survivor and I would really like to blow here away with a gorgeous engagement ring. She deserves it for sure.

O.K., here goes.

I've got a budget of between 5 and 6 thousand for an engagement ring. My girlfriend likes silver for the color so platinum is the metal. I suppose it could be palladium if that would get a better stone and still be of high quality and be a tasteful choice. She has said she likes solitaires, but I bet she would like a 3 stone ring also, and I'm picturing two pears surrounding a round stone. If I can't find one nice enough in my range I'd downshift to a larger solitaire. I've been reading the the sweet spot for stones and platinum color is an I or J, VS2 or SI1. I'd get the best cut stone in the largest carat weight I could wrangle and stay within budget. She has large hands, with a size 7.5 ring finger, so this makes the selection harder. Should I go with multiple stones to match her hand, or larger center stone to do the same? I'm open to anything that is reasonable. I'm not very knowledgeable about jewelry, so anything you could do to guide me is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Ron :wavey:

Hi there,

Okay that's good info. Can I ask why you think she'd like a 3 stone and in particular one with pear side stones? Or is that what you like.....Don't take that in a bad way, I just want to get more info. I love a 3 stone too ::) . A three stone with pears or 3 rounds will give nice lateral coverage. But if she loves a solitaire, then you may be well suited to get the best and biggest stone and set in a classic solitaire. She can always add side stones later to the diamond you propose with for an anniversary upgrade. I would stick with I, VS or SI1. Let's see what we can find you in the way of stones.

I am going to say go with side rounds and not pears. Pears usually look better with larger center stones so that the pears actually curve with the shank rather than sitting flat on top like wings.

Your budget is going to be hard to do a three stone ring. Let me look and see what might be possible while JDDN does, too.

Definitely platinum and not palladium.

These are platinum and includes the side stones, so that leaves about $4k for the diamond. I'd ask if they'd do H color in the side stones. The three stone with almost .90 center is going to give more finger coverage than a 1 ct round, so I'd go with the 3 stone for a 7.5 finger,

Okay, DS linked some nice 3 stone settings if you want to go that route. I'm still voting to do a nice solitaire and get the largest diamond you can now and then let her decided if she wants a 3 stone and do that for your anniversary.

I normally would agree if the diamond could be a carat or more, but that .897 is going to appear to be the same size as those around .90 (because it is basically .90), so he really has nothing to lose by getting it with a setting with side stones.

Thanks JDDN, I "went shopping" with her last night and.she decinitely wants a solitair. With that in mind any ideas as to what to get her in a platinum ring with a single I or J Vs1 to SI size 7.75 comfort fit ring would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you, Ron

Buy her a solitaire.

The "she TOLD me she likes solitaires but I bet she'd like 3stones" is concerning. If she flat out told you what she wants, I think you should get that for her.

So glad you two went and tried things on together. That is SO smart ::) . Okay, now we know she wants a solitaire. Does she prefer 4 or 6 prongs?? Does she want a cathedral setting?

These two stones will be gorgeous, if you are even remotely interested in them, put both on hold which you can do over the weekend. They were the only ones in that price point in their respective inventories and both will be stunning. If you like them, I would choose based on which vendor has the setting you like and go that route. I think Brian Gavin Diamonds has some gorgeous solitaires. Here's a couple I like, but definitely take a look for yourself.

For Whiteflash these are nice:

P.S. I looked at James Allen and in my first pass didn't see any stones that jumped out at me. If I have more time later I'll look at other vendors.

Awesome. I have some things to consider! I took her out again today and she refined her selection further. We put on every type of ring she considered pretty. She did still settle on a solitaire, but she changed her mind about it in that she really loves the cathedral style over the simpler form. She just though the stone looked like it was hanging out there ready to get snagged and pop off. She also determined that she definitely wants a 6 prong setting. So I am well on the way.

I will take a serious look at the links you have provided and see how it goes. Now that the side stones are not in the picture that frees up a little more for the stone.

Thank you so much for your guidance. I really appreciate it and I trust she will too!

Best,

Ron

Thank you Neil, I have given her more chances to consider it and have dropped the side stones from consideration.

Thanks again, :))

Hm...none of those except the Tacori for a princess cut diamond are cathedral settings. The second link, the Tacori has a very subtle cathedral shoulder. I like that one the best but you'll need to find it for a round brilliant stone and it has 4 prongs not 6.

When you said she liked a solitaire, did you mean she liked pave on the shank?? I was thinking of a simple solitaire with no pave, but I could've assumed that. Honestly I don't like any of those except the Tacori for a princess diamond and that is a four prong and you said she wants 6 prongs. Those are really bulky settings and may overwhelm a 0.9 carat stone.

Are you considering that ring on Jet.com?? Because...don't. It says it's 3.5 carats clarity enhance for $5999.99. I cannot begin to tell you how bad of a deal that is.

Let us know if she's changed her mind on 4 vs 6 prongs, the cathedral shank, and if she wants diamonds on the shank. When you guys tried rings on, did she like dainty rings or rings that were more substantial?

TaylorMcCarthy, thanks for the suggestions. I certainly like them, but my girlfriend likes a plain ring with no ornamentation beyond the cathedral.

Thanks again,

Ron

That is a very masculine ring. And shanks that thick are not in fashion right now. It will also make the center stone look small.

It may appeal to YOU. But you aren't the wearer.

Lol, If fits all my gals requirements. She asked for 6 prong cathedral. She has big hands, size 7.5 ring size. Masculin? Hmmm. How can you tell? GYPSY, if you can find a better 6 prong cathedral ring lead me to it! These guys are hard to find!

Thank you,

Ron

Honestly?
7.5 isn't that large. Not large enough to make 3mm thick bands necessary. It may follow he technical requirements but I think it won't fit the idea she had in her head.

that thick of a band is really going to diminish the stone. It's really not a "classic" ring and not something i'd get unless she specified a thicker band.

Look at these compared

this is a 1.8mm band. the first pic you can click to on the IRL rings is a 1ct stone.
https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...-basket-knife-edge-engagement-ring-item-41048

now compare to this one, a 2.6mm band, the first picture you cal click over to is a 1ct stone

https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...ng-twist-solitaire-engagement-ring-item-50116

Can you see the difference in how the band diminishes the stone in the second picture? the thinner band really sets the stone nicely.

And just because her ring is 7.5 (which really isn't huge) doesn't mean she will want a thicker band, either. Lots of women feel a thinner band is more feminine. (this coming from someone that has a 3mm band)

I actually have this setting and it's lovely. The prongs are very delicate and sleek. I removed the diamond to sell, so I have this sitting around. Wish I could sell it to you! It's probably too small (5.25) to size and it's for a 7.75mm stone. But I wanted to give you an example of a really classic cathedral 6 prong setting. I will agree with the others that 7.5 finger is not huge and that setting you linked, even though it technically ticks all your boxes, it's not a setting I would choose unless your GF tried it on and loved it. It's bulky and may dwarf a 1 carat stone.

The Danhov solitaire Niel linked is beautiful. Thoughts on that one?

THIS. It's a much, much better option. It will look great. The other one is very bulky and honestly unattractive. If you truly feel she would want a thick shank, we can find you something better.

Great find! Danhov reportedly has great quality too. And I love the head. Totally agree that's a gorgeous option. And 7.5 is NOT that big.

Here are additional options:

GYPSY, JDDN, FightGravity, Neil, farrahlyn and everyone else on who has helped me on PriceScope, you are right! I showed her several pics of rings and she chose those styled with thinner bands and an inward swept cathedral. They are a much better choice and now I get it.

I had looked up 6 prong cathedrals settings on Google and it came up with very few, but you have given me beautiful rings to choose from. Thank You!

If you come across any other ideas please chime in, I haven't made a final pick and really appreciate your help.

Thanks again, you guys ROCK!

Ron :)
