These, with some heavy-duty backs: http://www.whiteflash.com/diamond-earrings/8-prong-martini-diamond-earrings-640.htm

Or a sterling silver Tiffany necklace. I got my niece a dragonfly necklace for her 16th that she still wears a lot five years later. The Elsa Peretti initial pendants can be nice too, depending on the initial. Most simple Tiffany silver pendants cost less than $250, which would also give you the option of adding a cash gift. (BTW the "significance" of the blue box etc. was totally lost on my niece, but no matter - she still loves the necklace.)

I like the bezel or martini diamond earrings, very classic. Pearls are gorgeous but I'm not seeing many teenagers wear them these days.

Some more options:

Yennyfire - my daughter (now 17) got a lot of jewelry for her bat mitzvah. I got her a slender gold ring with tiny diamonds in it. She does not like initial jewelry nor name jewelry - it could be a regional thing as girls out here in the west don't wear a lot of initials.

She also got pearl earrings which she loves.
For her 16th I gave her OMC 1.0 tcw studs in yellow gold.

She also loves;

tiny rose gold, white gold and yellow gold and silver rings, no stones
thin rose gold bangle with tiny diamonds
dbty bracklet
petite pendent made for her with a small pink purple sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds in rose gold, kite set (she does not wear a lot of necklaces. With activities, sports, etc. necklaces get in the way.

There is an IDJ bar 14k bracelet (also made similarly by Blue Nile) with diamonds on the bar. I think IDJ is $425 or so. My daughter said she would wear it.

At 13 they still don't like big jewelry nor anything that makes them stand out from the other girls.

you could take her jewelry shopping and see what she likes and what looks good on her .... and then order on line.

My niece asked for pearl studs for her 12th birthday. She is very athletic, but the young girls in our area wear pearl studs and pendants. Another good option, but not nearly as special as diamond studs.

Does anyone have an irl photo of a .25ct bezel pendant? I know she's only 13, but .25 seems tiny to me. I can't picture what that would actually look like?? Thanks!

I do like the DBL sapphire earrings....I think she'd like those.

I'm going to send my sis some photos and see what she likes.

Thanks everyone!!

An ideal .25 will be approx 4.1mm. Set in the bezel, about 5.2mm....really not so small.

HI:

I wear a .35 ctw and I think it is large!

There was a young lady in line behind me at Sephora today. She had on a white metal DBTY necklace and it was smaller than mine and looked perfect! So pretty/feminine--not too small and just that simple elegance and sparkle.

cheers--Sharon

Is there an online vendor that you would recommend that is upgradeable?

Also, here is a pic of CBTY in pink sapphire size .18. I am a size 16 so it does look small on me. Maybe someone has a pic of the .25 but you could use this an a guide, for now. It is DD's she wears this every day. She has has the .13 bracelet and that is too small, even for my petite dd.

Here is also a pic of a .33 pendant. Even in the basket setting, it look so much bigger than the .18 sapphire in the bezel setting.

Ohh! Those actually look really large! Plenty big for a young girl but not too small as she gets older!! Thanks Sharon and Staceyjan!

Happy I could help provide a visual example. One day we are going to get a jumping on the pink sapphire necklace to make it 14 inches so it lays shorter on her collarbone.

My mother is going to get my DD a piece of jewelry for $450 since that was the price of the BGD huggies for my other DD. I may add the difference to get something a little more substantial. I am leaning towards a DBTY bracelet in 14K but still undecided. If I decide not to add any $ I think we will go with CBTY in aquamarine. I just hate that it is a .13 and that they do not have it larger. I also personally feel that I would rather pay a little more for gold from a different vender as compared to the price of T silver.

My vote is for necklace instead of earrings. Earrings get lost at a much higher rate than necklaces, in my experience (I think I could find statistics to back me up!). Young teens are especially prone to losing jewelry. Just my 2 cents.

This is why my daughter in college is only allowed to wear simulants!

But Yenny, her necklace and studs are all .25 each. I think that is a nice size through the teens and 20's.

I like the IDJ DBTY single necklace, but I didn't post it because after upgrading the stone, I new it would be over $600.

It will be interesting to see what her mother says.

Agreed, DS. My sis may be appalled at the thought of my buying real jewelry for my niece. However, I have a gorgeous pair of Beverly K lever back diamond earrings and my DD (age 9) loves to wear them when we go out for a special occasion...not that I'd ever give a 9 year old $3k earrings, but boy, she sure does love them! I'm in real trouble with her, aren't I?? :o

It's so upsetting that a Star of David can't be a contender. One my besties a was the only Jew in her small Arkansas town and she says she was regularly baptized at her Jr. High pool parties. She had a way better attitude about it than I would have :/

I had two thoughts here:

1. Pearl studs with a pave diamond halo, these are $650 but I'm sure you could have them made for less of a markup (I also think 8mm is a bit wide for a kiddo).

https://www.ritani.com/earrings/freshwater-cultured-pearl-diamond-halo-stud-earrings-8mm-in-18kt-white-gold/14151

I do realize pearls can be seen as dated, but they are still very prevalent in both the south and my neighborhood (New England) and I think the diamond halos will add some extra spice. Plus, the freshwater shave the advantage of a flat back, which is practical for every day and activewear.

2. I feel like the kids these days are wearing a lot of delicate yellow or rose gold, and nobody, noooooobody does this better than Grace Lee. Here are a few suggestions:

http://gracelee.com/products/details/mini_bar_necklace

You could customize with her name, and some diamonds on either side. I love the idea of her name in Hebrew! Or on the back if you wanted to keep it neutral to the outside world but also close to her heart. Grace is great with custom designs if you wanted to get her birthstone in there in some way...

I know you didn't say rings but I can't help but suggest her petite lace band or ID ring stacked with a whisper ring:

http://gracelee.com/products/details/id_ring
http://gracelee.com/products/details/diamond_whisper_ring

Mazel Tov! Fun problem :)

Does it have to be jewelry? How about $ for her college fund? Much more practical and useful, right?

Yenny, I bought this for my 10 year old DD for her bday. It's tiny, but it's very sparkly. I love it and it's a forever piece to me. It can be layered as she gets older. The pics are of me but I wouldn't mind wearing it myself. She likes to wear it on special occasions although I don't mind her wearing it on weekends. As she gets a little older I would be ok with her wearing it daily. It was custom by BGD and not quite $600.

I love this piece and I think this would be beautiful for your niece Yenny.

I'm not a big fan of pearls for someone so young but diamonds are a girl's best friend. :appl:
I don't think you can go wrong with diamonds ever. The necklace LLJsmom linked is age appropriate IMO and the perfect gift for a young lady on her Bat Mitzvah.

Thanks SB, pinto bean, Missy, LLJsMom and Laila. I think these are all great ideas! Yes, SB, it's sad that I can't consider a Star of David. It might be perfectly fine, but I'm just not willing to take a chance.

Laila, everyone will give her money as a gift. That's kind of why I wanted to give her something of significance that she'll always have a remember as a gift from me to her on her Bat Mitzvah.

Both of my daughters were given pearl strand necklaces and they have worn them a combined total of 0 times (we live in the south).

I also feel a necklace, or chain and pendant, or ring is nicer than earrings, and also less likely to be lost.
Maybe a ring with her birthstone? Depending on her style could be classic with accent diamonds on each side, or a more modern take like a bezel.
For me what I would have loved at that age was either the above (birthstone ring) or a set of (small) gemstone earrings set in gold. girls this age seem to wear a lot of stud earrings.

Is there a reputable online vender to buy a nice gemstone? If so, maybe the CBTY in her birthstone in WG. I looked quickly and did not locate any that went in details about the stone. It seems for about $200 more, it would be worth it to get a diamond that could be upgradable in the future.

You know my vote is the DBTY diamond!

Hi Yenny,

I've been following your thread with interest, mainly because I'm nosy & want to see what you buy. Plus, I like the creative minds here & there have been some nice suggestions.

I just got a notice from Blue Nile about a new promotion, 10% off over $500 & 20% under $500. Promo Code: OVERUNDER. A bit weird since most would think the larger discount would apply to a larger order. Oh well, means a little bit of work to put in 2 orders & ship to 2 different addresses. But us PS'rs are a savvy bunch thats for sure. There's a bunch of exceptions but there does seem to be quite a bit that qualify for the sale.
