On a budget but not wanting to sacrifice quality, princess

Hey Pricescope. I have 4 questions/topics I could use some help with.

1) Please let me know if I'm being unreasonable to expect the following. I have a very tight budget on my center stone. It needs to be princess cut, and it needs to come in at around $1500-1600 max. At this price, some might say, who cares about all the fine details, just get a stone that you like. Anyhow, here's my thinking: I'm looking to optimize light performance on an eye-clear stone. For color D-H, it seems like I can approach a .5 to .6 ct stone while adhering to Table% < Depth%. Does this sound right? I haven't seen many stones in person so I'm not sure how large a table is going to be appealing to my eye. I've been trying to get close to the AGA cut charts for ideal cuts (1A?) on princesses.

2) Is it alright to expect to see ASETs from local jewelers when buying at this price range? JA provides these and they have some rocks in my range. Blue Nile says they can't make them. Any other vendors that can get me ASET imaging? I've only been able to meet with a handful of my local jewelers thus far but none carry AGS stones. It seems like they wouldn't be able to provide ASET images, at least not from their own equipment. How can a local jeweler get an ASET shot for me? It seems like the solution is to shop online, but with my limited experience, seeing the stone is person seems like it would be beneficial. Should I head into a city where there's just more supply to shop? New York City isn't far. I don't own an idealscope and I'm not sure I trust myself to use one.

3) What is the best way to see some stones in person? It doesn't seem like many jewelers have a large quantity of stones in my price range and characteristics sitting around in their shops.

4) The setting has been challenging. It needs to be yellow gold and accommodate a princess cut. Here are pictures of similar concepts http://imgur.com/a/n68Whto what she is interested in. She wants something with shanks that are somewhat twisted. I think channel or pave set small side stones are nice as well. No halo. Trying to find all this for <1000 that can accommodate a princess cut has been challenging. Any input here is appreciated. All things failing, something with no additional gems in it would be fine.

1. Cut is always important. You're on the right track. I would probably get her something like this one.
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-3189830.htm
Setting...they make this for a princess. If you scroll down you can see a picture of it set with a princess. (pick gold).
http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/legato-sleek-line-solitaire-engagement-ring-1022.htm

You can also look at settings on this page. You may need to put "princess" in the search field.
http://www.whiteflash.com/gallery/solitaire-engagement-rings.htm

2. No, some/a lot of jewelers will not have asets at any price range or size. They dont have the equipment.

3. Go to the closest big city and ask for AGS000 stones in your size. You could also just ask to see a princess cut in the
same mm that you are looking at on line. (that will give you an idea of the outline size of the stone). I would be hesitant
to ask someone to bring in stones for me to see if I werent interested in buying from them. If you are interested in the
jeweler then ask them to bring in some stones that meet your specs.

4. Under $1000 for a setting shouldnt be too challenging because you're not looking for any extra stones.

Here is a stone at JA that you would need to request an aset on.

The other option would be to contact ID Jewelry and tell them you are looking for an AGS000 princess in your budget.
They are very good at working in tight budgets and should be able to find you what you want.

Edit --IDJewelry carries Gabriel & Co settings (like the ones you posted). If I were you I would probably contact them.

1) Your budget and expectations sound reasonable, but unfortunately judging princess cut quality is much more complicated than table < depth. One way to virtually guarantee a beautiful cut is to look at AGS0 princesses, since AGS is the only lab that grades princesses on cut quality. However, these tend to be branded stones which carry a premium (the amount varies based on the vendor - Whiteflash, Brian Gavin, and Good Gold Gold have less of a premium than Hearts On Fire, for example).

2) Many jewelers don't provide ASETs or don't know what an ASET is. I think James Allen, Nice Ice, B2C Jewels, and maybe a few others will provide ASETs on request, but you have to select the stone first. This is why I really like James Allen for tight budgets. Their stock is almost all GIA rather than AGS, but their search results show photos of the actual diamonds, so it's easy to weed out the duds and zero in on the ones with more potential. And from there, you would select 3 to request ASETs to further narrow them down.

Here are the ones I'd recommend looking at first:
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.50-carat-e-color-vs1-clarity-sku-544682
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.52-carat-e-color-vs2-clarity-sku-216357
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.51-carat-g-color-vs1-clarity-sku-373109 - I like the small table on this one

These also have potential:
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.57-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-357404
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.52-carat-h-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-515692
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.53-carat-h-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-324958
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.50-carat-g-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-301154

3) Princess cuts vary widely in cut quality, and unfortunately most of what you'll see in stores aren't up to snuff. I think Jared carries some AGS0 princesses, and you could see if there's a Hearts On Fire dealer since they're a branded ideal cut. Since you're near NYC, you might want to check out ID Jewelry, a well-known PS vendor that offers ideal cuts and can work with your budget.

4) These are available in 14k YG and within budget:

Thanks for the great answers! Some of those stones look really good. I'll look into the suggested jeweler. None of those settings unfortunately are quite what she wants. I'll keep looking! Let me know if anyone finds some affordable settings similar to the album in my first post.

Definitely look into ID Jewelers - as tyty mentioned, they might have some of those exact settings.

Re: On a budget but not wanting to sacrifice quality, prince

For closure:

I contacted ID and they were extremely responsive and very very helpful. Unfortunately, neither their shop nor the market had AGS 0 cut graded princesses in my price range. I had a move for work coming up and was unable to continue doing business with ID. What I ended up doing was working with Whiteflash who had multiple AGS 0 princesses in my price range.

Through an independent shop who makes settings for different jewelers around the US, I found a setting that was quite in style with what she wanted. I ordered a semi-mount through a small business who worked with them. Their customer service was horrible, unfortunately. I had the setting sent to me in the mail which was then shipped to whiteflash who mounted the stone, The finished product was sent to me. Thanks Whiteflash! Their customer service was impeccable. The ring is gorgeous.

Crap, it's been a month already? It's a 0.6 c princess F VS2 AGS0 cut. Here's a shot:

Another try. It's SI1, btw, not VS2. Struggling with the site's auto compression.

They made this video for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVHhx8PseoA&feature=youtu.be.. I can't say enoguh good things about their customer service.

I actually went with the first stone TYTY recommended, looking back on it. I looked at many of their stones and that was the best bang for the buck, imo, and also is a gorgeous gem. Thanks for all your help!
