What Are Your Life NUMBERS So Far?

The sheer number of things that you own and go through, during your life, is staggering.

I wrote this up once for my husband's anniversary card, and it shocked me.

In my life so far:

Married 32 years

E-rings 4 (if you count my anniversary ring, which is all I wore for 7 years)

Apartments 11

Houses 5

Cars 10

Cats 6

Dogs 2

Couches 12 (including 4 in my current home  )

Purses over 20

It takes some thinking, but it does give you a longer view of life and all it's "stuff".

What are your numbers?
:wavey: Feel free to add in anything you want (lots of yoga mats? waffle makers?), let's hear it.

My grandmother - married for over 70 years - says that marriage gets easy after the first 50 years. Can you confirm?

What colors do you collect and what's your favorite piece? We do green and yellow. I think my favorite of them is the real tiny ones that are perfect for single-serve chicken pot pies. We have a bunch so we can make them in bulk and pop them in the garage freezer - they cook better in le creusets than in single-serve size pie tins!

I just used kindle books since there was an easy count available for that on the app - if I counted up LIFETIME books I'd surely be well over 5k. I have always bought between 3 and 6 books per week, and if you multiply that times weeks in a year times since kindergarten... that's a lot of books. I've only ever gotten rid of two - Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld and Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay, the two books that win my award for "the only books I hated so much I didn't keep" - so I could count them all up, but that seems like way too much effort.

Wow!! 70+ years of togetherness (sanctified by marriage). Way to go :appl: :wavey:

After 50 years, our memories fade too and we don't have the energy or the wish to start all over again.

One sobering thought for me is that I can't imagine life without my sweetheart.

Hi distracts- my favorite piece is actually the kettle. Reddish/orange in colour. We don't use it often, more of a show piece on the kitchen stove. Just a little bit pop of color. I use it about once a month!!! We have an electric kettle that gets used all the time.

O'wise my 28cm shallow pan gets used every single day!!!
I have a wok as well which gets used now and then.
I have the baking trays for the garlic breads.

So- slowly acquiring them.

All right people . . . :wavey: there are some numbers here that need explanations from you or worthless commentary from me:

distracts; that's a lotta Kindle! Mostly fiction or nonfiction?

Kenny: what do you do with your old pianos?

isaku5: 52 years! What's your secret for a long marriage?

gregchang35: how do you keep the Le crueset clean? Mine seem to be all stained from lots of use.

House Cat: Finally, someone that has also gone through a ton of couches. Kind of makes you snicker when you hear the words "heirloom furniture" doesn't it?

KaeKae; I'm ignoring the rats. :) did you inherit all the china?

Manderz; okay, we now need a list of where all the piercings are :naughty:

diamondrnglover: do I hear disappointment in the "no grandchildren" part? I, too, am still without grandchild. :nono:

Jambalaya; I have also lost friends to inexplicable sudden bitchiness (ISB). We should start a foundation to find a cure.

distracts; I need to get the T-shirt: "Marriage is easy after the first 50 years". Your grandmother's a hoot!

isaky5; Yeah, I couldn't do all this again!

greg; please see question above

LLJsmom: What the heck is bikram?

Cflutist; I'm so glad you can start to laugh about that surgery, you have a great spirit! What kind of teddy bears? I will slip in a number that wasn't on my original list: I have over 300 teddy bears. . .

jordyonbass: WTH is a billfish? And what do you have against them?

Mainly Steiff, Hermann (German), Merrythought, Dean, (British) and a whole bunch of others. Right now they occupy two bedrooms (floor to ceiling), our hallway bathroom, our laundry room, my hubby's office. You can see why I want to get rid of them. Hubby also runs a store on our own Linux Webserver, but he put all of that on hold in February because of my impending surgery.

Billfish are the family of marine fish that typically have a long upper jaw that is called a 'bill'. Swordfish, Marlin, Sailfish and Spearfish all come under the 'Billfish' family.

And I have nothing against them at all, quite the opposite actually!! My father and I have devoted much of our life and income to targetting large, oceanic apex predators when we go fishing. Around 15-20 years ago there was major problems with bio mass sizes around australia, so my family (along with hundreds of fishermen) helped to introduce the gamefish tagging program which has helped marine biologists track size, growth rates, distribution and migration patterns of a species we otherwise knew virtually nothing about other than the observation that it wasn't so prevalent anymore. Since the introduction of the tag and release program, the wildstocks have bounced back and more fishermen are now releasing their captures with the highest level of care taken. It's a beautiful thing

I had recently looked into our logbook after I decided to start keeping one when I was 16-17 years old; 203 fish in 10 years isn't bad when I estimate our family only caught 50 or so in the 10 years before that! :appl:
Of all my numbers, that's probably one I am most proud of. For marine biologists to get the same kind of data, it would take millions of dollars of investment, donation and fund-raising followed by tens of thousands of hours of labour. We really do offer a fantastic way for science to conduct research without the massive expenditure required for the data.

Here's a pic of me and a 200lb Marlin we tagged and released, he was re-caught just over 18 months later and was pushing 300lb :twirl:

Thanks, Greg - I often get the Le Creuset pieces for my husband for gifts since he is HARD to buy for but he always uses cooking stuff. He's been complaining about needing a new kettle - so I am totally putting that on the list.

Ah, well, I've only been with my husband for five years and I can't imagine life without him already... or remember it, even. We've both managed to accidentally insert the other into memories of things we did long before we met each other, and have to work to figure out who was REALLY there since it certainly wasn't the spouse!

She really is! A lot of humor comes from the fact that all of her ideas are SO out of date - totally mired in the 1950s (or earlier). She is shocked that I've been married two years without having a baby - she told me at my wedding that nine months to a year later, I'd have a baby "that's just what happens, you can't stop it."   Not entirely sure how to explain to her that there are ways of preventing that.  ;-)

Probably 2/3 fiction to 1/3 nonfiction - maybe more like 75/25 though. I buy a lot of nonfiction books in paper if I think I may need to reference back to them out of order, since I find that difficult to do with ebooks. I am such a book junkie - I don't have genre barriers if it looks interesting.

Hi ilander...
LONG story...
keeping the le creuset stain free.... well, my set is only at most 2.5yrs old. That is how long we have been in our new house. also, i cook maybe 4/ 7 days, so not used daily, is my meaning. .. Also.. the kitchen stove top is induction. not sure how it works but it may be easier on the pans than open flame or electric stove tops??? my previous kitchens were gas/ electric... So, when we moved in....we HAD to replace all my cook ware!!!!!

le creusets were the ones that caught my eye. are all non stick pans. i mainly do stir fries. so, the only 'stains' (more discolouration from use on the heating element area) i see are at the base of the pan, which i can live with; see pic. is this what you mean???

i have a cast iron wok that i dearly love the look of, but its too bloody heavy and it is supposed to be non stick, but it isnt... so i only use it when i run out of pans....

i dont own any bakeware, as i dont usually bake... only a tray to heat up garlic bread... heeheh.
there is a skillet that is always hard to clean, so its really an immediate soak when i have finished using it to make it easier to clean.

Cleaning is usually dishwashing liquid and a dish rag. nothing special, i dont think..

I am not sure if that helps????
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
hi Distracts

There are 2 types of kettles... this is a pic of the one i have which i love....it is the classic shape / colour combo that got me.

however, i have seen this 'new' type where i think it is more practical. i did not see this design when i was doing the kitchen ware replacement... the cover over the spout is connected to the handle, which makes is so much easier on the fingers.

.

there are so many creuset cookware that i like, so i slowly buy the items i want.. er.. oops.. i need... :)
