First timer looking for a color change sapphire

Hi everyone,

I am new to this site as well as looking into sapphires. My boyfriend and I have been looking into rings and I've decided that prefer a colored sapphire over a diamond. The top two places I have been looking through online searches were NSC and BE, which both seem to have mixed reviews.

Could anyone help me out regarding the quality? This is the one I was thinking about.

All opinions and suggestions are appreciated!

Thank you,

Song

The daylight color is often a greyish blue - if you like this - fine!

I like them very much - and you get them much cheaper...

Hi Marlow,

Thanks for the input. From what I read so far a grayish tint is not good, right?

Also, what other sites or places would you recommend? I would prefer non-treated natural or I would be okay with just a heat treated sapphire.

Thanks again,

Song

That same seller also had another color change Sapphire available in his ebay store. That stone was smaller but precision cut and also came with an AGL cert saying that it was totally untreated. If you are looking for a round Sapphire, check out this one from thegemtrader.com

Hi, Song. Do you have an idea of the following:

1. Budget is $3k (possibly up to $5k)
2. Size in mm
3. Shape you prefer (or don't want)
4. Do you like purples and blues only? Finding a true pad might be difficult depending how you answer 2, 3 and 5. :)
5. Is there a time frame

Nothing wrong with a grayish tint if you like it and don't overpay for it. It looks more like a colour shift than a colour change in the video; even when placed side by side, the colour difference is very muted.

I actually purchased this stone awhile ago...I'm not sure why it is still listed on his site!

Very happy with it though, and would recommend him as a vendor. :)

SparkliesLuver: I would like a stone around 6.5mm and either cushion or round. I really love the pad but I agree I think it would be tough finding one within my range. What exactly makes a true pad? Seems like theres so many shades out there! Aside from the padparadscha I also love the color change blue-lavender. My time frame would be within the next 3 months.

Chrono: Thanks for the feedback, I definitely would prefer a color change that is more prominent. Also, regarding a stone with that kind of window. What are the chances of it closing when put in a setting?

Ipodobe: I was interested in that stone...darn, lol. Its so pretty! :)

Thanks everyone for all the info. This has been so helpful!

Fine blue with and CC to pink is very rare. A greyishblue to pink or a violet with a shift to pink is easier to get.

There are sapphires from Eastafrica with a change ( like alexandrite) from a muddy ugly green to a rhodolite like color too.

NSC is overpriced imo.

Have you considered color shifting spinels? They can also go from blue to purple/lavender.

It probably will not close completely; a darker stone can get away with it much better than a light coloured stone.

Although these aren't color changers, I still think they're worth a second look.

Blue sapphire (I see a hint of purple)
2.37cts
7.35 x 7.21 x 5.53 mm
Heat only
VS
$3,300 (you could always make him an offer - he does negotiate)
http://mastercutgems.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=8204

Purple sapphire (says it shifts to bluish-violet under fluorescent light)
1.77cts
7.5 x 6.2 x 4.6 mm
VVS
Untreated
$1,295
http://www.gemfix.com/sapphire_blue.html
(1st row, 2nd column)

Violet sapphire (read description tho!)
1.77ct
6.78 x 5.84 x 4.68 mm
VS
Untreated
$2,655
AGL also calls it a violet sapphire but I see a distinct color change to blue in outdoor lighting. *He also has several others on this page I'd look at if I were you
http://www.finewatergems.com/sapphire.html (3rd from the bottom - check out the video, too!)

SparkliesLuver: I just purchased the purple sapphire you posted. I ended up really liking it and wanted to see it in person. Hopefully the picture is as accurate. Thanks again for the help!

I started another post for feedback on the ones I've narrowed it down to. Feel free to share your thoughts! :)
