depends on the lighting and the specifics of the diamond.
In strong spot lighting the fire show is often even better at a distance because the light rays are bigger and the colors more separated.
In strongly diffused lighting they can look like a bright dot at a distance with occasional sparkles where closer you can see the play of light and sparkles better.

Remember the person across the table or room is seeing the diamond in a totally different way than you are.
In mixed lighting they may be seeing mainly fire and you mainly brightness or you mainly fire and them mainly brightness.
They are seeing totally different virtual facets than you are and the lighting interacting with those virtual facets is different also.
This is even more apparent in other than round or square stones and one person looking from the short side and another from the long side.
While at first it seems like a simple question the answer is far from simple.

When my sister comes to visit she often wears my AVR around the house for kicks. Not only do I not mind, I really enjoy getting to see my stone from across the room/table. It is like seeing it again for the first time, and I find myself appreciating the performance from that viewing distance possibly even more than when I am wearing it.

Can someone explain what 'real life' light is considered strong spotlight/strong diffused?

MGR, Sundial
If you are referring to my Octavia it is being resized (9.25 to 8.5) at Gelin Abaci. They will remake the setting since tension settings can't be resized it should be back in about 3 weeks.

strong diffused would be an office with florescent tubes and low ceilings with the white diffuser panels on the lights or the torch style lights that light up the ceiling with no other lights.
strong spotlight would be pot lights in the ceiling that aren't using cfl bulbs(some kitchens) or small halogen lights or direct sunlight on a clear day.
Florescent tubes in a very high ceiling can also act like spotlights, aka warehouse store lighting.
