I think he should stick with GIA and ask for ASET, idealscope etc. From my personal experience, AGS grades 1 color better than what GIA would grade it as.

That's what some people say, but IMO it depends on which group of graders were working at the lab for that day.

What do you think about GIA# 5161722961 for 3900?

I've only see a limited number of Ags graded stones and both were shockingly over graded on color compared to my comparable GIA stone. one of the AGS stones was a VC Euro cut (The largest one he currently has in stock).

The cutter is hiding some extra weight in the thick girdle so that it'll hit the .90ct magic mark.

Okay: so which is the best buy? 6172387170 for $4200
5161722961 for $3900
5186229518 for $4200
I can probably bring prices down another $2-300.

My question: would you be happy with this purchase, if you were me (I am just looking to not get ripped off and for something sparkly).

If I were you I'd look for a well cut stone < 90ct somewhere in the .85-.88ct range

IMO, it is not a good idea to buy diamonds just hitting the magic mark (in this case .90ct) you should look for a well cut stone just below .90ct

Here's similar color/carat/clarity diamonds I'd take over your options any day of the week at similar price:

https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/view/R86-6SDAXG
Very nice idealscope and decent hearts pattern to boot. Need to check if the very strong blue flourscence has any negative effects. Almost 1000 cheaper than your other options and faces up the same size.

https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/view/R90-FRD917
Better color, cheaper, better cut - and confirmed good light performance with ASET. Plus it's cheaper than your options.

That's fine, we're posting our suggestions so you can use for your reference the quality that you can be getting at the price that you're paying. At 4k you should basolutely be able to get a top notch G/F SI1. Since it sounds like you don't want to explore all the inns and outs of diamond proportions, maybe give your guy a cheat sheet: 62.0% depth or lower, 57% table or lower, 34-35 crown angle, 40.6-41.0 pavillion angle. It's really hard to get a bad diamond in those parameters. There are good diamonds outside of those specs, but it's much harder to find a bad diamond within those specs than it is to find a good diamond outside of them. The most important is probably staying around a 40.6-40.9 pavillion angle

Then after you have several diamonds that meet these angles and %, use the HCA calculator to double check the results. Having an IS on hand is a plus.

IS stands for IdealScope. Basic info here:
https://www.pricescope.com/tools/ideal-scope

I'm also hoping you will press this friend of your father for details on the mounting, e.g., the cut and caliber of the diamonds, how he plans on making it/having it made. Because, to be honest, I am leery as to the quality of a double-halo mounting -- with pavé band -- he is prepared to deliver for $650.

I erased what I wanted to say. Listen we all have people on 47th street and they just want to sell you a diamond you have to be very careful and very specific and there are no deals regarding diamonds you simply get what yooou pay for and this is an important purchase for her sake and for your happines that she's happy so work with us and get the best bang for your budget. the family friend will get over it if he understands you know what your doing .

Whoa. Thanks for all this help. What diamond do you think should fall in the 3850 range? I mean it pays to repeat that he is doing other work too on the ring itself. Maybe I should ask him for another diamond with a better cut. But which diamond?

UPDATE: just spoke to jeweler and told him whats up. he said he'll look for better stuff. I told him I don't think im being unreasonable since if this stuff is accessible to me, it's definitely accessible to him (hes on 47th street). He thanked me for being explicit and said he's looking. I think, because of the Northeastern snowstorm, certain diamonds that he wanted to show me, did not come in. He showed me what he had, and me, a complete know nothing in diamonds, decided to go with it. What diamond should I be looking for, what parameters?

edited for clarity (pardon the pun)

Py vey you said the majic bad word 47th street.....If you are there go to ID jewelry 15 West 15th street suite 305 they are PS and they are honest and understand pS quality stones. All 47th street people don't understand ideal diamonds we have long time friend that sold me my first two sets of studs that werer not gia certified and I got squat for them when I wanted to upgrade and they were not as good quality as he said and I trust him and sodid all my family members. Trust the people on this forum as this is all we do.

Yes - you are getting ripped off.

The real question is... now what?

You don't seem receptive to better options offered here, even though they are quantitatively and qualitatively superior to the offering from 'your guy'.

If you want the best deal on a well-cut stone, cut out the middleman (your 'guy'), and get a stone from an online vendor (some have shops on 47th - not street level).

I am quite receptive. So much so that i told the jeweler to screw the first diamond. I told him the parameters and he gave me 2186047647 for 4000. This a ripoff? ?

It's this stone right? https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/view/R91-NH21FD

While it's not a superideal hearts & arrows, this stone actually looks pretty good ASET-wise and price-wise at $4k. The only question I'd have is if you're ok with the inclusions and it's pretty easy to see from the picture. If your friend can bring it in for you and you can see it for yourself and feel comfortable with it, then you may have found a good one! Price-wise you're not getting ripped off on this one though. Good job!

It sounds like he's more or less tied to this jeweler due to family relations, for better or for worse. While it's obviously not the route alot of PSers would go through, it is what it is and understandable if you value the relationship with that person as well. Doesn't sound like he's asking for recommendations for diamonds, but opinions on the diamonds he has available to him from the jeweler, which is a fair request.

That is a much better option for an additional $150 in my opinion. I'd have him get that diamond in for you to see what you think.

GIA 2186047647 is the best stone you have posted so far and I would say you aren't getting ripped off. The only issue with this diamond are the inclusions. You can see the picture of the exact stone here: https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/view/R91-NH21FD

Keep in mind that if your guy is on 47th street he most likely has access to a lot of the stones that online vendors have access to. Hence, this is why this stone was simultaneous offered on enchanted diamonds and by your guy. There is the possibility if you find a diamond online, you can take the GIA number to him and he can go get it for you!

All that being said, I understand you want to buy from your guy! I hope PS helps you find a diamond that you can get from your guy.
